Living here

Sol de Mallorca and Cala Vinyes (Cala Viñas) are two small coastal developments in Calvià, on the pine-covered headland south-west of Magaluf, about 30 minutes' drive from Palma’s old town. Cala Vinyes is built around a sandy cove with hotels and apartments close behind it. Sol de Mallorca is quieter and mostly residential, a place for sea views and pine woods within half an hour of Palma.

South-west of Magaluf, the coast runs past Cala Vinyes to Sol de Mallorca, on the headland that stretches south to Cap de Cala Figuera. Sol de Mallorca had 767 registered residents in 2025. Its villas and apartments stand on the cliffs above the sea, with the coves of Portals Vells just to the south-west. On a small hill near the road from Magaluf to Cala Vinyes is the Naveta d’Alemany, the remains of a Bronze Age stone dwelling that is open to visitors.

Cala Vinyes is the main beach: a U-shaped inlet ending in two stretches of fine, golden sand, joined by a short promenade lined with palms. In season it has sunbeds, parasols and a lifeguard, and hotels and apartment buildings stand close behind it. A little further south, Cala Falcó is a smaller sandy cove between rocky cliffs and pines, reached by steep steps, with sunbeds and a beach bar. Sol de Mallorca’s own shore is mainly cliffs, with a tiny sandy cove, Caló de sa Nostra Dona. Beyond it lie the three beaches of Portals Vells, one of them naturist, in pine woods protected for their landscape and birdlife.

Cala Vinyes has a few restaurants and shops, but for most errands people go to Magaluf or Palmanova, about 10 to 15 minutes' drive. The nearest public health centre is in Palmanova, which also runs a smaller weekday-morning unit in Son Ferrer. For a market, Son Ferrer has one on Fridays and Santa Ponsa on Saturdays. TIB bus 105 starts in Sol de Mallorca and runs every day through Cala Vinyes, Magaluf and Palmanova to Palma’s Estació Intermodal, taking about 55 minutes. The timetable in force since March 2026 has a bus roughly every hour, but last winter it ran only about every two hours.

The island’s casino stood in Sol de Mallorca from 1979 until 2011, when it moved to Porto Pi in Palma, and the old building has been empty since. In 2026 a new owner bought the site and announced plans for a luxury hotel of about 100 rooms with a restored beach club, aiming to start work in 2027 and open in 2029 or 2030. If you are looking at a home nearby, ask how far the project has got.

Who buys here

Most buyers here want peace, a view and the pines around them, and accept that errands mean a drive. With the airport about 35 minutes away, it can work as a second home or as a year-round base. Families have the Sa Porrassa campus of Baleares International College about 10 minutes away, and the international schools in Portals Nous about 15 to 20 minutes away. Cala Vinyes, with hotels around its beach, is busier in summer.

Property

Sol de Mallorca has a broad mix: detached villas with gardens, semi-detached and terraced houses, and blocks of flats and apartments, set among pines and green spaces. Many homes look out to sea, and the council presents the area as upmarket, with luxury properties among the apartments. Cala Vinyes is denser, with hotels and apartment buildings close to the beach and homes and residential developments behind.

Questions buyers ask

Is Sol de Mallorca part of Magaluf?

No. Sol de Mallorca has its own entry in Calvià’s population figures, with 767 registered residents in 2025, and sits on the headland south-west of Magaluf. Cala Vinyes lies between the two, and Magaluf’s beaches and shops are a short drive away.

Where is the nearest beach?

Cala Vinyes, a sandy cove with sunbeds and a lifeguard in season. Cala Falcó, a smaller sandy cove reached by steps, is between Cala Vinyes and Sol de Mallorca, and the three beaches of Portals Vells are just beyond Sol de Mallorca.

How do I get to Palma or the airport without a car?

TIB line 105 runs every day from Sol de Mallorca through Cala Vinyes, Magaluf, Palmanova and Portals Nous to Palma’s Estació Intermodal, in about 55 minutes. Since March 2026 it has run roughly hourly; last winter it was about every two hours. For the airport, change to the A11, which shares several stops with line 105 along the coast.

Is there an international school nearby?

Yes. Baleares International College, a British-style school running up to A level, has a campus at Sa Porrassa, about 10 minutes' drive. In Portals Nous, about 15 to 20 minutes away, are King Richard III College, which follows the English curriculum, and Agora Portals International School, which teaches the International Baccalaureate.

What is happening to the old casino?

It closed in 2011, when the casino moved to Palma, and has stood empty since. A new owner bought the site in 2026 and plans a luxury hotel of about 100 rooms, with work expected to start in 2027 and an opening in 2029 or 2030.
