Living here

Cala Ratjada (officially Cala Rajada) is the largest town in the municipality of Capdepera, on the eastern tip of Mallorca about 80 km from Palma. It has a harbour, sandy beaches within walking distance and a protected coast to the north. Choose it for a seaside town with everyday services, as long as busy summers don’t put you off.

Cala Ratjada sits on a rocky headland about 3 km from Capdepera village, the municipality’s old centre and home of the town hall. It began as a small fishing hamlet. In the early 20th century some of the area’s wealthiest families started spending their summers here and built summer houses, among them the March family’s villa at Sa Torre Cega. Fishermen asked for a sheltered harbour as early as 1915, but the works only went ahead in the 1940s. Tourism took off in the 1960s, and by the end of that decade Cala Ratjada was a major resort.

The harbour is still the heart of town. The fishermen’s guild, founded in 1923, marked its centenary in 2023, though today the harbour serves more pleasure and excursion boats than fishing boats. Cafés and restaurants line the seafront from the port south-west to Son Moll, a town beach about 150 metres long. Plaça dels Pins is the main square, with the tourist office, the taxi rank and the Saturday morning market. North of the centre, Cala Agulla is a natural sandy beach about 520 metres long, backed by dunes. Since 1991 it has been protected as an area of special natural interest, together with Cala Moltó and Cala Mesquida.

From Cala Gat, a small cove just east of the harbour, a walk climbs to the Capdepera lighthouse, in service since 1861 on the island’s easternmost point. On clear days you can see Menorca from there. On the rise between the harbour and Cala Gat, Sa Torre Cega, the March family’s former summer house, has large gardens with a collection of 20th-century sculpture, open only on booked guided tours. The town’s big days are the Mare de Déu del Carme on 16 July, with a procession at sea, and Sant Roc on 16 August. In October a fair celebrating the llampuga (dolphinfish) is held at the harbour.

The 2025 register counted about 7,160 people in the town, more than half the municipality’s population and up from about 2,560 in 1981. That keeps it going all year, with a public nursery, a state primary school, a public health unit, pharmacies, supermarkets and the Centre Cap Vermell, which houses a library and an auditorium. The main health centre, the secondary school and the town hall are in Capdepera village, 5 to 10 minutes away by car, and Manacor has the nearest hospital. Hotel life follows the season, so winters are much quieter than summers.

Who buys here

Buyers here usually want to walk to the beach, the harbour and the shops, and need a place that keeps going in winter: families with young children, retirees and holiday-home owners alike. Most summer visitors come from Germany. Anyone who values peace in late spring and summer should look away from the bars in the centre and the approaches to Cala Agulla, where party groups gather.

The oldest part of town is the core around the harbour, where the Passeig Colom keeps buildings from the early 20th century, when wealthy families first summered here. Most of the rest was built for tourism from the 1960s onwards. Hotels and apartment blocks are thickest in the streets leading to Cala Agulla and around the centre, with more along the seafront at Son Moll. The edges of town are calmer and more residential: towards sa Pedruscada in the south, many homes have private pools.

Where is the town hall?

In Capdepera village, about 3 km inland. Cala Ratjada belongs to the municipality of Capdepera and is the largest of its settlements, with more than half the registered population; the municipality also includes Font de sa Cala, Canyamel and Cala Mesquida.

What is Cala Ratjada like in winter?

Quieter, but still a working town, with a primary school and a health unit that carry on all year. The hotel trade follows the season, though: in 2021 the head of the local hotel association said that, despite years of trying, winter tourism does not work here.

Is there a problem with party tourism?

At times, yes. In late spring and early summer, groups of young visitors and stag and hen parties, mostly German and British, have brought heavy drinking, loud music and litter to Cala Agulla. After night-time fights in 2024 the council, the Local Police, the central government’s delegation and the Guardia Civil set up a joint taskforce, and in 2026 local politicians were still calling for more enforcement at the beach.

Which schools and doctors are in town?

In town there are a public nursery, Escoleta Eriçons, a state primary school, CEIP S’Auba, and a public health unit on Carrer Juan Sebastián Elcano, open on weekdays. The secondary school, IES Capdepera, is on the edge of Capdepera towards Cala Ratjada, the main health centre is in Capdepera village and the hospital is in Manacor, about 35 minutes away.

Can I get to Palma by bus?

Yes. TIB line 411 runs all year from Cala Ratjada through Capdepera and Artà to Manacor, stopping at the hospital and the train station, where you can change for Palma. From late March to October, line 411e runs direct to Palma’s main bus station, the Estació Intermodal.
