Living here

Peguera (Paguera in Castilian) is a seaside resort at the western end of Calvià, about 25 to 30 minutes from Palma, with three sandy beaches and a shopping boulevard. Cala Fornells, a small cove with a 1970s hillside apartment village, lies on its western edge. Long a favourite with German holidaymakers, it is also home to around 4,100 registered residents.

At the western end of the municipality of Calvià, Peguera has Costa de la Calma and Santa Ponsa to the east and Camp de Mar, which belongs to Andratx, to the west. The Ma-1 motorway runs just inland. The name comes from a works that made pitch (pega in Catalan) here from the 14th to the 19th century. The first hotels opened in 1928 and 1930, and the resort took its present shape after 1958, when the family that owned the estate pushed for its full development. Around 4,100 people were registered as living in Peguera in 2025.

Three sandy beaches line the shore, joined by a seafront promenade. Torà, where the boulevard begins, is a town beach with calm water, a gentle slope, pine shade and a children’s play area. La Romana, the smallest, is quieter, with fine white sand among rocks and pines. Palmira, the largest, has a palm-lined promenade behind it. In summer all three have lifeguards, a Red Cross first-aid post and sunbed hire. The bay is open to winds from the south-east, south and south-west, which can bring waves straight in. Each October the Challenge Peguera Mallorca triathlon starts with a swim off Torà.

The Bulevard de Peguera, behind the beaches, is the commercial heart, lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. The council began rebuilding it in stages in the winter of 2025 to 2026, and the first 300-metre stretch, with new paving, drains and planting, was inaugurated in summer 2026. Peguera has a state primary school, CEIP Xaloc, a nursery school, a public library, an indoor pool, a sports centre, a cultural centre, a centre for older people and a tourist office. A public health unit opens on weekdays from 8am to 3pm. A market is held every Tuesday morning, and the local festes take place at the start of September.

Cala Fornells, on Peguera’s western edge, takes its name from a small cove of coarse sand, roughly 30 metres long, with clear water and terraces built on the rocks for sunbathing. On the hillside above stands a low-rise apartment village designed by the Russian-born builder Pedro Otzoup and built in the 1970s. A council walking route carries on from the cove through pine woods to the small cove of Caló d’en Monjo and the 16th-century watchtower on Cap Andritxol.

Who buys here

Peguera has a strong German flavour: the council says Germans make up the large majority of its visitors, and in 2012 most owners in the first of the Cala Fornells apartment complexes were German. The resort suits buyers looking for a beach flat or a holiday home for part of the year, and with a school, health unit, library and shops close together it also works for retirees who would rather not drive everywhere.

Property

Hotels and apartment buildings dominate the resort, most of them built from the late 1950s onwards along the beaches and the boulevard. Around La Romana, hotels and detached houses sit among the rocks and pines. Cala Fornells is different: a low-rise hillside village of 1970s apartments, uniform in style but each unit different in size and layout, linked by narrow lanes and stairs among gardens and pines. Its many steps and levels make it a poor fit for anyone with limited mobility. Hotels and other homes line the shore below. Holiday letting needs a licence, so ask to see it before you commit.

Questions buyers ask

Is Peguera the same as Paguera?

Yes. Peguera is the official Catalan name and Paguera the Castilian form, and you will see both. They mean the same resort at the western end of Calvià.

Is Cala Fornells part of Peguera?

Broadly, yes. It is the western end of Peguera, in the municipality of Calvià, built around a small cove. The council treats it as a separate zone but serves it from the same zone office in the Casal de Peguera, and Peguera’s school, health unit and shops are the nearest. Camp de Mar, just beyond, is in Andratx.

What is Peguera like in winter?

Much quieter than in summer. The holiday season starts around Easter, and much of the tourist trade closes over the winter. Thousands of people live here all year, though, and the primary school and health unit stay open for them through the winter.

Is there a doctor and a school in Peguera?

Peguera has a public health unit open on weekdays, and the main health centre for the area is in Santa Ponsa, about 10 minutes away, with an urgent care point (PAC) open 24 hours. CEIP Xaloc is the local state primary school; its pupils go on to IES Calvià near Santa Ponsa or IES Baltasar Porcel in Andratx, each about 10 minutes' drive. Baleares International College at Sa Porrassa is about 15 minutes away.

Can I reach Palma and the airport by bus?

Yes. TIB line 102 runs between Palma and Peguera all year, with several stops along the resort, and the A11 links Peguera directly with the airport.
