Living here

Costa de la Calma is a quiet residential estate on the western stretch of Calvià’s coast, between Santa Ponsa and Peguera, about 25 minutes from Palma. Villas, houses and apartment complexes spread down the slopes to a rocky shore with small coves rather than a long sandy beach. It makes a peaceful base, with Santa Ponsa’s shops and services a short drive away.

Costa de la Calma sits on the coast just west of Santa Ponsa, on the way to Peguera, with its own exit from the Ma-1 motorway. It feels more like a residential estate than a resort: streets of villas, houses and apartment complexes climb the hillside above the sea, with some hotels among them. About 1,700 people are registered as living here, against just over 400 in 1991. Calvià council groups it with Es Castellot as one of its local zones.

The shore is rocky, and swimming here means open water. The main beach, Cala Blanca (also called Es Castellot), is a small cove with a short beach between Punta des Gats and Punta des Castellot, with low rocks either side. Elsewhere people swim from the rocks or from small beaches below the cliffs, and a coastal path leads to a beach bar with sunset views, where the council lists a bathing area. Cala des Gats, next to Cala Blanca, is one of only two beaches in Calvià where dogs are allowed, from 8am to 8pm. For long sandy beaches, residents drive to Santa Ponsa or Peguera.

Everyday services are modest. The council lists hotels, small supermarkets, bars and restaurants, a pharmacy and some clothes shops, and there is a municipal sports area on Carrer Santa Ponça. For most other things, residents go to Santa Ponsa, 5 to 10 minutes by car, which has the nearest public health centre, a much wider choice of shops and a Saturday market. Peguera, about 10 minutes away, has a Tuesday market. Some TIB line 103 buses run through to Palma, and line 122 links the area with Santa Ponsa, Peguera and Andratx. The shore gets noticeably busier in summer.

Who buys here

Costa de la Calma is mainly residential, and its registered population has grown a lot since the early 1990s. Some owners live here all year and others use their homes for part of it. It suits couples and retirees who want quiet streets and sea swimming, and people who know Santa Ponsa and want to be near it without living in the middle of it. Families can manage, with state schools nearby in Santa Ponsa and Peguera, but the school run means driving.

Property

Housing comes in many forms: detached and semi-detached villas, terraced houses, apartments and apartment complexes, plus some hotels. The streets nearest the shore give easy access to the sea, while homes higher up the slope mean more of a climb but often wider views. One complex near the coastal path is designed to look like a cluster of rustic villas. The estate was begun by a group of Catalan architects who tried to fit the houses to the terrain, and later building also went up along the shoreline.

Pros and cons

For

  • Its own exit from the Ma-1, between Santa Ponsa and Peguera
  • Clear water for swimming off rocks and in small coves
  • Santa Ponsa and Peguera both within about 10 minutes by car
  • A dog beach, Cala des Gats, within the estate

Against

  • No long sandy beach; swimming is mostly off rocks
  • Only a handful of shops; most errands need the car
  • Hillside streets mean an uphill walk back from the sea
  • Further from Palma and the airport than the Bay of Palma resorts

Questions buyers ask

Is Costa de la Calma part of Santa Ponsa?

No. It has its own postcode (07183, where Santa Ponsa is 07180) and about 1,700 registered residents of its own. Calvià council groups it with Es Castellot as a zone of its own, but residents rely on Santa Ponsa for most services.

Is there a sandy beach in Costa de la Calma?

Not a long one. Cala Blanca is a small cove with a short beach between low rocks, and elsewhere you swim from rocks or small beaches below the cliffs. The long sandy beaches of Santa Ponsa and Peguera are each within about 10 minutes by car.

How car-dependent is Costa de la Calma?

Very. Shops are limited and many streets run uphill from the sea. Some TIB line 103 buses go to Palma and line 122 links the area with Santa Ponsa, Peguera and Andratx, while the A11 airport bus stops in nearby Santa Ponsa and Peguera.

Where do residents see a doctor, and where are the schools?

The nearest public health centre is in Santa Ponsa, with a smaller weekday unit in Peguera, and Son Espases hospital is about 25 minutes away. State primary schools nearby include CEIP Puig de sa Ginesta on the inland edge of Santa Ponsa, CEIP Ses Rotes Velles and CEIP Puig de sa Morisca in Santa Ponsa and CEIP Xaloc in Peguera, and IES Calvià is the nearest state secondary. Baleares International College on the edge of Magaluf is about 10 to 15 minutes away.

Can I take my dog to the beach?

Yes. Cala des Gats, a small cove next to Cala Blanca, is one of two beaches in Calvià where dogs may go, from 8am to 8pm. Owners must keep dogs under control and clean up after them.
