Living here

Cala Major is a seaside neighbourhood on the western edge of Palma, about ten minutes from the cathedral. Officially it is part of the city, but it has the feel of its own small resort, with a sandy cove, sea-view apartments and quiet residential streets climbing the hill behind.

Cala Major sits between Portopí and Sant Agustí, along the main coast road west out of Palma, with Illetes just beyond. The small beach is the centre of the neighbourhood, with cafés and restaurants around it. The Marivent Palace, the Spanish royal family’s summer residence, is here, and so is the Fundació Miró Mallorca, the studio and gardens where the painter Joan Miró lived and worked.

It is popular with people who want to be by the sea but within easy reach of the city. The old town, Santa Catalina and the Paseo Marítimo are a short drive or bus ride away, and the Southwest’s marinas and golf courses are just beyond Illetes.

Who buys here

A mix of Spanish families, Scandinavian and German residents and second-home buyers who want city life and the sea in one place. It is a good choice for people who work in Palma.

Property

Along the seafront and the main road the stock is mostly apartments, many built in the 1960s and 70s, which are steadily being renovated. Up the hill towards Gènova and Son Vida the streets become quieter, with townhouses and villas, many with views over the Bay of Palma. Frontline and sea-view apartments with terraces are the most sought after.
