Living here

Calvià Vila is the small inland village that shares its name with the municipality of Calvià and holds its town hall. It sits in a farming valley with wooded hills and mountains behind it, about 10 minutes' drive from the beaches at Santa Ponsa and Palmanova and 25 to 30 minutes from Palma. It is the place in Calvià for village life within easy reach of the sea.

The village lies in the gentle central valley of the municipality, about seven kilometres by road from Palmanova, with wooded hills around it and the Puig de Galatzó rising to the north. A parish of Sant Joan is recorded here in a papal bull of 1248, but for a long time people lived scattered across the countryside. Houses slowly gathered around the church, and the village grew most in the 18th century. The old church was pulled down in 1867, and the present church of Sant Joan Baptista was finished in 1896 after a long pause in the works. It has two slender twin bell towers.

The town hall for the whole municipality stands at the entrance to the village. Along the Carrer Major and around the Plaça de la Vila there are cafés, a small supermarket, a pharmacy and a bank. There is also a library at Can Verger, a municipal music school, a sports centre, a nursery, a state primary school, a public health unit and a residence for older people. Every Monday more than 60 market stalls line the Carrer Major near the church. Bigger supermarkets and the area’s main health centre are in Santa Ponsa, about 10 minutes away.

The village keeps its own calendar. In January bonfires are lit for Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià, the largest beside the church, and the council says the celebrations are recorded as far back as 1652. Sant Joan, patron saint of the municipality, is a local holiday on 24 June, and Sant Jaume in late July brings the village’s main fiesta, a week of events. The Fira d’Oví i Caprí, a sheep and goat fair, is held in the village in spring. Calvià Vila is a popular stop for cyclists, and the council-owned Galatzó estate, on the road from Es Capdellà to Galilea, has walking routes into the hills.

Who buys here

Calvià Vila is a year-round village with no beach or resort strip of its own. About 2,800 people were registered in the village and the countryside around it in 2025, up from about 1,700 in 1981, and there is no reliable breakdown by nationality. It suits families who want a primary school, a market and the town hall on the doorstep, with the coast and the international schools 10 to 15 minutes away, and buyers who would rather have countryside and space than a sea view.

Property

The old centre, around the church and along the Carrer Major, has traditional stone village houses on narrow streets. Further out the houses are more spread out, with orchards and fields between them, and across the valley there are country houses and fincas among the olive and almond groves. Most of Calvià’s land is classed as rustic, much of it protected under the Natura 2000 network, so building and extending in the countryside is tightly controlled. A village this size has only a limited supply of homes, so have any property’s licences and legal status checked before you buy.

Pros and cons

For

  • A real village with its own Monday market, school and town hall
  • Beaches at Santa Ponsa and Palmanova about 10 minutes away
  • Olive and almond countryside, with mountain walks close by
  • International schools about 15 minutes, central Palma 25–30

Against

  • No beach or seafront in the village itself
  • Village health unit closes at 3pm and is shut on Thursdays
  • Few shops; bigger supermarkets mean a drive to the coast
  • Strict limits on building and extending in the countryside
  • Only one bus line, so most journeys mean driving

Questions buyers ask

Is Calvià Vila the same as Calvià?

The name covers both. The municipality of Calvià stretches along the coast from Illetes to Peguera and inland to the mountains, while Calvià Vila is the small inland village of the same name. The town hall, which runs the whole municipality, is in the village.

Where do children go to school?

The village has a state primary school, CEIP Ses Quarterades, and a nursery school. Its pupils move on to the state secondary school IES Calvià, in the Galatzó area near Santa Ponsa, about 10 minutes by car. Baleares International College at Sa Porrassa is about 15 minutes away.

What about doctors?

The village health unit opens on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 to 15:00. It comes under the Santa Ponsa health centre, about 10 minutes away, which is open longer hours. For hospital care, Son Espases in Palma is about 25 minutes away.

Can I get to Palma by bus?

Yes. TIB line 107 runs between Es Capdellà and Palma, stopping in Calvià Vila, Galatzó, Santa Ponsa, Palmanova and Portals Nous on the way. It is the only bus line through the village, so check the timetable; for daily life most residents will want a car.

How far is the nearest beach?

Calvià Vila is inland. The beaches at Palmanova and Santa Ponsa are both about 10 minutes' drive away, roughly seven to eight kilometres by road.
