Living here

Pòrtol and Sa Cabaneta are neighbouring villages in Marratxí, a short drive north-east of Palma. Sa Cabaneta is the seat of the town hall, and Pòrtol, just to the east, is the island’s main pottery village. Between them they have schools, health units, a library and a weekly market, so village life comes with central Palma 25 to 30 minutes away.

These are two of the old villages of Marratxí, the municipality that runs north-east from the edge of Palma into the Raiguer. Sa Cabaneta, about 15 km by road from the centre of Palma, grew after 1745, when scrubland beside the church of Sant Marçal was divided into plots, and the town hall moved here in 1864. Pòrtol lies under 3 km further east, on a low pass at about 180 metres, and grew from an old estate called Pòrtula. It had about 1,800 residents in 1991 and about 4,100 in 2025.

Pòrtol’s potters have made cooking pots from white clay and red earth since the late 17th century, and the trade peaked in the 19th and 20th centuries. The official tourism site places most of the island’s pottery workshops in Pòrtol. The town hall’s pottery route lists twelve, ten in Pòrtol and two in Sa Cabaneta, where the speciality is siurells, small white clay whistles painted with red and green. The Museu del Fang, in a former mill in Sa Cabaneta, keeps traditional pieces, and there is a municipal ceramics school. The Fira del Fang, a clay fair held since 1984, fills Plaça de Sant Marçal each March.

Sa Cabaneta has the town hall and a citizen service office, a small public health unit and, on the Sant Marçal side, the state secondary school IES Sant Marçal. Pòrtol has a state primary school, CEIP Miquel Costa i Llobera, on the road to Sa Cabaneta, a municipal library, a municipal pool, a youth centre, its own health unit and a market on Thursday mornings in Plaça de l’Església. The town hall’s planning department also has its office in Pòrtol. Round-the-clock urgent care is at the Martí Serra health centre, on the Sa Cabana side of Es Pont d’Inca, and the reference hospital is Son Llàtzer in Palma.

Sant Marçal, Marratxí’s patron saint, is celebrated on 30 June at his church beside Sa Cabaneta, where children were traditionally bought a siurell, and Sa Cabaneta’s festes in the first week of September include the siurellada, a parade of people dressed as siurells. Pòrtol honours its patron, the Mare de Déu del Carme, around 16 July, in a parish church begun in 1875. Neither village has a station, but the Marratxí and Es Caülls stops are 5 to 10 minutes away by car, and trains from both reach Palma’s Estació Intermodal in under 20 minutes. TIB bus 341 links the villages with Marratxí station and Son Llàtzer hospital.

Who buys here

Marratxí has grown as new estates went up around its old villages, helped by the closeness of Palma and the motorway and train links. Pòrtol and Sa Cabaneta suit families who want schools and a market close by, people who work in Palma or travel often, and buyers from abroad who would rather live in a working Mallorcan village near the capital than in a resort.

Both villages keep an old core of traditional village houses: in Pòrtol around the church and along the streets of the potteries, in Sa Cabaneta around the town hall and the church of Sant Marçal. Around them, most of the newer housing is in residential estates (urbanitzacions) of detached and terraced houses, built from the 1980s onwards. Pòrtol Nou is a smaller settlement just to the east. If you look at a country house outside the villages, have a lawyer confirm that every building on the rustic land is licensed and recorded.

How do I get to Palma without a car?

By train, after a short drive or bus ride. Neither village has a station, but the Marratxí and Es Caülls stops are 5 to 10 minutes away by car, and trains from there reach Palma’s Estació Intermodal in under 20 minutes, every 10 to 20 minutes for most of the weekday and every half hour at weekends. TIB bus 341 runs from both villages to Marratxí station and Son Llàtzer hospital, and on some trips to the FAN shopping centre, but not into central Palma.

Do the villages have their own doctors?

Each village has a small public health unit open on weekdays during the day, though not every day in Sa Cabaneta. Both belong to the Muntanya health centre in Son Ramonell Nou. Urgent care around the clock is at the Martí Serra health centre by Es Pont d’Inca, and the reference hospital is Son Llàtzer in Palma, about 15 to 20 minutes by car.

What is the pottery tradition here?

Pòrtol has made earthenware cooking pots since the late 17th century and still has most of Mallorca’s pottery workshops. Sa Cabaneta’s workshops are known for siurells, the small painted clay whistles. The Museu del Fang in Sa Cabaneta and the Fira del Fang each March are the best introduction.
