Living here

Port de Pollença (Puerto Pollensa) began as a fishing village and is now the seaside town at the northern end of the Bay of Pollença, where the Formentor peninsula begins. About 7,600 people live here all year, around a long, shallow beach and a large harbour, 6 km from Pollença town and roughly an hour from Palma. Families, sailors and walkers will find it a relaxed base.

Locals still call it el Moll, the quay. In 1860 a single fishing family lived here. A customs house followed in 1865, and by 1900 there were about a hundred inhabitants. By the late 1920s British visitors had found it, and Agatha Christie later set a short story in the bay. The painter Hermen Anglada Camarasa made his home here. Today it is the second town of the municipality of Pollença, with about 7,600 registered residents in 2025, against some 9,400 in Pollença town.

Port de Pollença stretches along the shore. South of the harbour, a long, narrow beach of coarse sand runs towards Alcúdia, with pines a few metres back from the water. It was widened artificially with added sand after a breakwater was built, and the seabed shelves gently, which suits small children. North of the harbour, the Pine Walk is a car-free seafront path past older villas and small beaches, leading towards the military air base. The harbour holds fishing boats, a public marina run by the Balearic ports authority and the Reial Club Nàutic, founded in 1961. Small passenger boats cross to Formentor beach.

Everyday life centres on Plaça Miquel Capllonch and the parish church of the Mare de Déu del Carme. A market runs on Wednesday mornings in and around the square, and from June to September a night market sets up on the seafront. There are supermarkets, a public GP unit open on weekdays until 3pm, two state primary schools, a nursery and a state secondary school, the IES Clara Hammerl. Out-of-hours care is in Pollença town, and the nearest public hospital is in Inca. The port’s festes are Sant Pere, around 29 June, and the Mare de Déu del Carme on 16 July, with a procession of boats on the bay.

Summer brings full beaches, busy terraces and queues of cars heading for Formentor. Out of season the seafront is much quieter, and life carries on around the square, the shops and the schools. Firefighting seaplanes from the air base are often seen training over the bay. Pollença town, with its Sunday market, is about 10 minutes inland, Cala Sant Vicenç about 10 minutes and Alcúdia about 15. The Bóquer valley runs north-east from the town, and the Ma-2210 winds out along the Formentor peninsula to the lighthouse, almost 20 km away.

Who buys here

An easy-going seaside town with a year-round population, it works for families with children at the local schools, retired couples, sailors and windsurfers, walkers and cyclists, and second-home owners. British visitors have come since the late 1920s, and Britons are now the largest foreign community in the municipality. The largest groups of holidaymakers come from the UK, Spain and Germany, and long-established Mallorcan families still live here.

Property

Most building here is apartment blocks and small hotels, with few large hotel complexes, so flats make up much of the housing in the centre and behind the seafront. Older villas line the Pine Walk, north of the harbour. On the Alcúdia side of town, El Pinaret, Gotmar and Llenaire are mainly flats, small hotels and private houses, and newer blocks went up west of the centre. Bóquer and Can Singala, north of the centre towards Formentor, are further residential areas, and out on the peninsula homes are few and scattered. Questions buyers ask

Is Port de Pollença a separate municipality from Pollença?

No. Both belong to the municipality of Pollença. The old town, about 6 km inland, has the town hall and the main health centre, and the port is its harbour and beach town, only a little smaller.

Does the port empty out in winter?

The seafront goes much quieter out of season. Still, about 7,600 people are registered here, so supermarkets, schools and the GP unit keep going through the winter, and the Wednesday market is busiest in summer.

Can I get to Palma airport without a car?

Not directly. Line 301 runs all year from the port to Palma’s intermodal station, via Pollença and Inca, and from central Palma the A1 bus goes to the airport. From late March to October, the A32 airport bus leaves from Alcúdia, about 15 minutes away by car.

Can I drive to Cap de Formentor?

Yes, but not at all hours in summer. In 2026, from 15 May to 18 October, private cars could go no further than Formentor beach between 10am and 10pm, and only while the beach car park had space. The lighthouse road was left to buses, cyclists, walkers and permit holders, and in season bus 334 runs from the port to the beach and the lighthouse.
