Living here

Portals Vells is a cove with three small sandy beaches in protected pine forest at the southern tip of Calvià, about 9 km from Magaluf. It is known for its old quarry caves and for El Mago, an official nudist beach. With fewer than 30 registered residents, it rewards buyers who want seclusion by the sea and don’t mind driving for everything else.

The coves sit on the wooded headland that closes the Bay of Palma to the west. Cala Portals Vells, an inlet between two rocky points, splits into arms that end in three small beaches of fine white sand: the main beach, El Mago and Platja del Rei. El Mago was Calvià’s first official nudist beach and takes its name from The Magus, a 1967 film with Anthony Quinn and Michael Caine shot here. The water is usually calm and good for snorkelling and anchoring. Only the main beach has sunbeds and parasols, none of the three has a lifeguard, and there is free parking near the coves.

The cliffs are cut with old quarry caves, whose door-like openings may have given the place its name, and their stone is believed to have gone into Palma Cathedral. In one of them, the Cova de la Mare de Déu, an image of the Virgin was venerated until 1866, when it was moved to the new Oratori at Portals Nous. Legend says Genoese sailors left it there in the 15th century after sheltering from a storm. A 16th-century watchtower, privately owned and closed to visitors, stands above the coves, and the Cala Figuera lighthouse, lit in 1860, marks the headland further south.

Day to day there is little here beyond the beach restaurants by the coves. For shops, schools and doctors you drive to Son Ferrer or Magaluf, about 15 to 20 minutes away, and the nearest public health unit is in Son Ferrer. An 18-hole golf course lies along the Cala Figuera road on the way in. TIB bus 105 to Palma starts in Sol de Mallorca, the residential estate on the cliffs above, a walk of 15 minutes or more from the beaches.

Who buys here

Portals Vells has too few homes to have a typical buyer of its own. The handful of houses here suit people who want privacy, pine woods and the sea close by, and who accept that shops, schools and doctors are all a drive away. Anyone drawn to this corner will find far more choice in Sol de Mallorca next door.

Property

There is very little property in Portals Vells itself. Only 28 people were registered as living here in 2025, and the few houses are scattered among the pines. The American singer Dina Moore Bowden and her husband built one of the first, in 1932, and a nearby point, Sa Punta de Na Dina, still carries her name. The pine forest around the coves is protected land under Balearic law, where new building is tightly restricted. Most homes within easy reach of the beaches are in Sol de Mallorca on the cliffs above, which mixes detached and semi-detached villas with blocks of flats and apartments.
