Living here

A pine-shaded pebble beach, a lighthouse on an islet just offshore and an 18-hole golf course set the tone in Alcanada, a residential area 2 to 3 km east of the centre of Port d’Alcúdia, on the northern shore of the Bay of Alcúdia. It grew from a 1930s summer colony. Expect a quiet house by the sea, with the port within 10 minutes.

Alcanada lies along the southern shore of the peninsula that ends at Cap des Pinar, and locals pronounce it Aucanada. The name probably goes back to Albecanata, a farmstead of the Muslim period listed in the Llibre del Repartiment, the 1232 register of lands shared out after the conquest. In the early 1930s the architect Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí planned a summer colony here around Cala Poncet, modelled on a fishing village, and it counts among Mallorca’s first tourist developments. The Civil War halted the project, and when building resumed in the 1950s, later houses no longer followed his plan.

Platja d’Alcanada is about 700 metres of pebbles with a little sand, with pines behind it and shallow water in front. Washed-up seagrass is common along the shore, and the beach gets busy on summer weekends, when its car park fills quickly. The small cove of Cala Poncet is next door. About 140 metres offshore, the islet of Alcanada carries a lighthouse first lit in 1861; keepers lived there until it was automated in 1960. Behind the shore, the Club de Golf Alcanada is an 18-hole course by Robert Trent Jones Jr. that opened in 2003, with its clubhouse in the restored buildings of the old estate.

Alcanada is still known as a summer residential area. It has a few hotels, several restaurants and a supermarket, but the GP unit, the Friday market and the all-year buses are in Port d’Alcúdia, and the walled old town is about 10 minutes away. On the western edge, towards the port, stand the Torre Major, a defence tower finished in 1602, and the two chimneys of the old power station, which closed in the early 1980s. From May to October a local bus links Alcanada with the port, the old town and Es Mal Pas.

Who buys here

Golfers with the course on the doorstep, boat owners with a berth in Port d’Alcúdia, and couples looking for a second home or a calm place to retire all fit well here, away from the busier port and hotel strip. Because Alcanada grew as a summer colony, check what stays open nearby out of season. Families living here all year will drive to schools and most shops.

Property

Alcanada is a small area of houses around Cala Poncet and in the streets behind the beach, with a handful of hotels among them and the golf course to the east. The original core around Cala Poncet, laid out to the 1930s plan, still keeps something of a fishing-village look, and most of the rest went up from the 1950s onwards. Towards the port, beside the old power station, the GESA estate of 1957 has detached and terraced houses built for the plant’s staff. In 2020 planners backed turning it into upmarket homes, on condition that the original buildings and street layout are kept.

Questions buyers ask

Is Alcanada part of Port d’Alcúdia?

It is in the same municipality, and population figures count it with Port d’Alcúdia, but it is a separate residential area 2 to 3 km east of the port’s centre, beyond the commercial docks and the old power station. The port is 5 to 10 minutes away by car.

What is the beach like?

Platja d’Alcanada is about 700 metres of pebbles with a little sand, with pines for shade and shallow water. Washed-up seagrass is common on the shore, and the beach gets busy on summer weekends. The lighthouse islet lies about 140 metres offshore.

What is happening to the old power station?

The plant between Alcanada and the port was built in the 1950s and closed in the early 1980s, and its two chimneys are a local landmark. The Consell de Mallorca bought the site in 2022, stepping in when it was about to be sold to a fund that planned blocks of flats, and its most notable parts have been protected as heritage since 2023. Cleaning up the contaminated site was expected to take at least two years, and as of 2025 no new use had been decided.

How does the bus service work?

Only from May to October, when TIB line 323 stops at Platja d’Alcanada, Cala en Poncet and Ses Pedreres and runs to Port d’Alcúdia, Alcúdia old town and Es Mal Pas. The rest of the year the nearest buses are in Port d’Alcúdia, where line 302 runs to Palma all year.

Which doctors and schools would we use?

Port d’Alcúdia has a public GP unit open on weekdays, and the main health centre, Es Safrà, is in Alcúdia town, about 10 minutes away. The public hospital is in Inca, 25 to 30 minutes by car. Alcúdia’s state primary schools and its two state secondary schools, IES Moll Vell in the port and IES Alcúdia, are all a short drive away.
