Living here

Santa Ponsa is one of the largest residential areas in the Southwest, built around a sheltered sandy bay about 20 to 25 minutes west of Palma. It has its own beach, marina and golf courses, a long-established British and Irish community, and enough shops, restaurants and services to stay busy all year.

Santa Ponsa feels more like a small town than a resort. The beach at the head of the bay is wide and shallow, which makes it popular with families, and the promenade and main avenue have a mix of cafés, supermarkets, banks and pharmacies that stay open through the winter.

There is a marina, the Club Náutico Santa Ponsa, and three golf courses on the inland side of town. The headland at the mouth of the bay is where King Jaume I landed in 1229 to take Mallorca from the Moors, and a stone cross marks the spot.

Next door, Nova Santa Ponsa and Costa de la Calma offer quieter streets with more villas, while El Toro and Port Adriano are a few minutes to the south.

Who buys here

Families, retirees and second-home owners, mostly from the UK, Ireland, Germany and Scandinavia. Many buyers already know Santa Ponsa from holidays. The community is well established, so it is an easy place to arrive without knowing anyone.

Property

The streets closest to the beach are mainly apartments and townhouses, many built in the 1970s to 1990s and now being renovated. The hillsides around the bay and the golf courses have detached villas with gardens and pools, many with sea views. Larger plots and newer villas are found towards Nova Santa Ponsa and the golf area.
