Living here

Some 11,000 people live in Campos, a market town on the flat plain of southern Mallorca, 40 to 45 minutes from Palma on the Ma-19. Its municipality reaches the sea at Sa Ràpita, Ses Covetes and Es Trenc, 15 to 20 minutes away by car. This is the place for buyers who want a working Mallorcan town that stays busy all year.

Campos sits on a wide, fertile plain about 11 km by road from the beach at Sa Ràpita, on the Ma-19 between Llucmajor and Santanyí. Jaume II founded it in 1300 as one of his new farming towns, and its name refers to the open plain around it. In 2025 the town had 11,030 residents, out of 12,485 in a municipality that also includes Sa Ràpita, Ses Covetes and a few rural hamlets. Until recently Campos lived from farming: irrigated market gardens, dairy cows and capers. The railway arrived in 1917 and closed in 1964.

The parish church of Sant Julià, rebuilt between 1858 and 1873, keeps the bell tower of the earlier church, built from 1584 to 1597. Its nave is roofed with 817 blue and white coffers set with gold stars, and among its paintings is one attributed to Murillo. Several square defence towers, built in the mid-16th century against pirate raids, still stand among the houses of the old centre, and the town hall’s heritage list includes sixteen old flour windmills. Out in the country, the small oratory of Sant Blai is held to be one of the first churches built in Mallorca after the 13th-century conquest.

Campos stays busy all year, with markets in the centre on Thursday and Saturday mornings. The public health centre on Carrer des Tren sees patients on weekdays and provides urgent care at night and at weekends; hospital cases go to Manacor. Schooling is covered in town: the public nursery Els Taperons, two state primary schools (Joan Veny i Clar and Call Vermell, formerly CEIP Nou), the Fra Joan Ballester school, which teaches primary and secondary, and IES Damià Huguet, the state secondary school. There is also a municipal sports ground and a swimming pool.

The calendar carries on outside summer: Sant Julià and Santa Basilissa, the patron saints, on 9 January, the blessing of animals for Sant Antoni later that month, Sant Blai on 3 February and the October fair, on the first Thursday after 15 October. The May fair is known as the cow fair, after a cattle show first held in 1978, and the summer festes around 15 August go back to 1615. Between the town and the sea lie the Salobrar salt pans, 154 hectares where sea salt is still harvested by traditional methods, part of the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos natural park since 2017.

Who buys here

Campos is first of all a Mallorcan town that keeps its customs and festes, and it has no big hotel strip. It has grown quickly, from 7,132 residents in the municipality in 2001 to 12,485 in 2025, and since 2021 the Ma-19 has been a dual carriageway all the way to Palma. Life here works best for people who want a real town all year, with schools and shops on foot, and Es Trenc a short drive away.

Property

The old centre keeps several grand family houses (casals). Can Talladas, once the home of Bishop Talladas, is now two private homes, while Can Pere Ignasi, given to the town in 1985, holds exhibition rooms and the tourist information point. On the flat farmland around the town are country houses and old estates (possessions), several with 16th-century towers of their own, such as Sa Vinyola and Son Lladó. The land behind Es Trenc and the Salobrar is a natural park. Have an architect check what a plot allows, and before letting to holidaymakers check the licence, as new ones are tightly limited.

How far is Campos from the beach?

The nearest beach is at Sa Ràpita, about 11 km south-west by road and some 15 minutes by car, and the Ses Covetes end of Es Trenc is about 20 minutes away. Both belong to the municipality of Campos, and bus line 518 links the town with Sa Ràpita.

Is there a bus to Palma and the airport?

Yes, all year. On the timetable in force since late March 2026, line 501 leaves for Palma’s Estació Intermodal about every half hour on weekdays, taking 40 to 55 minutes, and line 403 goes to Palma by way of Porreres and Algaida. Line A51 starts in Campos and runs to the airport via Llucmajor and s’Arenal.

When is market day in Campos?

Thursday and Saturday mornings. On Thursdays the stalls fill the Plaça Major and the Plaça de sa Creu, and on Saturdays the market runs from the Plaça de sa Creu to the Plaça dels Tres Molins, with fresh food, crafts, clothes and second-hand goods.

What healthcare is there?

The public health centre on Carrer des Tren opens from 8am to 8pm Monday to Thursday and until 3pm on Fridays. Its urgent-care service (PAC) covers weeknights from 8pm and the whole weekend, from Friday at 3pm to Monday at 8am. The Hospital de Manacor, the area’s public hospital, is about 30 minutes away.

Is Campos busy in winter?

Yes. About 11,000 people live in the town, with schools, shops and two market days a week, and winter has its own festes, such as Sant Julià on 9 January and Sant Blai on 3 February. Sa Ràpita and Ses Covetes, on the coast, began as summer retreats for families from Campos, and Porreres too in the case of Ses Covetes.
