Living here

Pollença (Pollensa in Spanish) is the historic town of Mallorca’s far north, in a valley at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, about 6 km inland from Port de Pollença. Some 9,400 people live here, with their own schools and services, and Palma is about 50 minutes away. It is a place for people who want everyday town life all year, with the bay a short drive away.

Two hills frame the town, the Calvari and the Puig de Maria. It is also the seat of the municipality, which takes in Port de Pollença, Cala Sant Vicenç and Formentor. Its old centre keeps a medieval plan of narrow streets around the Plaça Major, where café terraces face the parish church of the Mare de Déu dels Àngels, built over most of the 18th century. From the centre, 365 steps climb the Calvari to a small oratory from the 1790s, with views over the valley. At the mouth of the Ternelles valley, the Pont Romà crosses the Sant Jordi stream, though its Roman origin is unproven.

Culture runs deep here. Painters such as Hermen Anglada Camarasa and Joaquim Mir came in the early 20th century, and the former Dominican convent of Sant Domingo now houses the town museum. Its cloister hosts the Festival de Pollença, a classical music festival held every summer since the early 1960s. On Sunday mornings the market fills the Plaça Major. For Sant Antoni, on 17 January, a tall pine from the Ternelles estate is climbed in the Plaça Vella. The Davallament on Good Friday is a silent procession lit by torches, and the Patrona fiestas end on 2 August with a mock battle of Moors and Christians.

The town has two state primary schools, the Monti-sion school, a state secondary school and a public health centre with out-of-hours urgent care. Two large supermarkets sit by the roundabout at the entrance from the port. The nearest hospital is the public Hospital Comarcal d’Inca, about 20 to 25 minutes away, and Son Espases in Palma about 45. TIB buses run all year: line 301 to Palma via Inca, line 322 to Port de Pollença and Alcúdia, and line 321 to Cala Sant Vicenç. Parking is the daily headache: the old centre is largely pedestrian, and residents have petitioned for resident-only zones as spaces run out in the tourist season.

The bay at Port de Pollença and the coves of Cala Sant Vicenç are each about 10 minutes by car, and Formentor beach about 25. In recent summers the road beyond Formentor beach to the lighthouse has been closed to private cars by day. Inland, summers can be fierce: on one August day in 2026 Pollença recorded the highest temperature in Spain. The Ma-10 winds west over the mountains towards Lluc and Sóller, and the GR 221 walking route passes through, with the Consell de Mallorca’s Pont Romà refuge on the edge of town. The Puig de Maria, with a hilltop sanctuary begun in 1348, is reached on foot.

Who buys here

Pollença has drawn outsiders for more than a century, from painters and writers to musicians. Today the town mixes local families with foreign residents, among whom the British are the largest group in the municipality, and second homes and holiday lets make up a large share of the municipality’s housing. Port de Pollença, 10 minutes away, has long been a favourite with British holidaymakers, and walkers come for the mountain paths that start on the edge of town.

The old centre is made up of townhouses in the traditional local style, on narrow streets already laid out by the 18th century. Outside town, the countryside holds many country houses and fincas on rustic land: Pollença has one of the highest concentrations of such properties in Mallorca, and many are let to holidaymakers under licence. Hundreds of owners have applied to legalise older rural houses under a Balearic amnesty, so check a finca’s paperwork carefully. The town hall is also bringing in a catalogue of 885 protected buildings and sites, so check whether a house is listed before planning any work.

What is the difference between Pollença and Port de Pollença?

Pollença is the old inland town and the seat of the town hall. Port de Pollença is the seaside resort on the bay, about 6 km away and part of the same municipality. The town is more about everyday life and history, the port about the beach and boats.

How far is Pollença from Palma and the airport?

About 50 minutes to central Palma and 55 minutes to the airport by car, using the Ma-13 motorway. TIB bus line 301 runs to Palma’s intermodal station, by way of sa Pobla and Inca, in a little over an hour.

Is Pollença lively in winter?

The town keeps its everyday life: about 9,400 people live here, with their own schools and health centre. Sant Antoni in January is the main winter fiesta. It is the coast nearby that winds down after the summer.

Can I let a house in Pollença to holidaymakers?

Only with a licence. The municipality has long had more holiday-rental places than hotel places, many of them in the countryside. As of 2025, flats could no longer be registered for holiday lets anywhere in Mallorca, and new places for houses were limited and sold by the Consell de Mallorca. If rental income matters, buy with an existing licence and have a lawyer check it.

Do I need a car in Pollença?

In the old centre you can walk to the shops, the market and the health centre. For the beaches, the bigger supermarkets and trips to Palma or the airport a car makes life much easier, although buses run all year to Palma, the port, Alcúdia and Cala Sant Vicenç.
