Living here

Just south of Santa Ponsa, about 30 minutes from Palma, El Toro is a residential area on Calvià’s south-west coast with the Port Adriano marina and a small sandy beach at its foot. The islet offshore that gives it its name sits in a marine reserve. It offers the sea and a marina on the doorstep, at a calmer pace than the big resorts.

El Toro was built on land known as Ses Penyes Rotges, after the reddish cliffs around its small bay, which owe their colour to iron oxide in the soil. Son Ferrer adjoins it to the east, and one of the Santa Ponsa golf courses borders it to the north. About 2,400 people are registered here. The Passeig Calvià, a green walking route, passes through, and the trails of Sa Morisca archaeological park, on a hill in Santa Ponsa, have viewpoints looking down over El Toro.

Port Adriano, the marina below the houses, was designed by the French designer Philippe Starck. It has 487 berths for boats of 6 to 80 metres, with room for yachts of up to 100 metres in summer, plus a boatyard, fashion shops and about a dozen restaurants. It holds a music festival with international acts each summer, regattas and motoring events in the autumn, and a Christmas funfair. Platja del Toro, a small sandy beach, lies between the marina and the red cliff, and there are two other small beaches nearby, one reachable only by boat or by swimming.

The Illa del Toro has been protected since 2004, and the marine reserve around it was enlarged in 2022 and redrawn in 2025. The Balearic government reports that stocks of some fish species there have grown many times over since protection began. Jet skis are banned in its high-protection zone, and group scuba diving follows set rules. On land, El Toro has supermarkets, shops and restaurants, a small public health unit attached to the Santa Ponsa health centre and open four weekdays, and a council cultural centre. Son Ferrer next door holds a market on Fridays.

Who buys here

Most buyers want to be close to the water without living in a resort. Boat owners have Port Adriano within walking distance, and swimmers and divers have the marine reserve just offshore. El Toro keeps going through the winter, and Santa Ponsa, with its large foreign community, its shops and its golf, is about 10 minutes away.

Property

El Toro is a residential area spread above the cliffs around its small bay. The homes most people picture are the detached villas on top of the red cliffs, many built almost to the edge, with open sea views. The area grew quickly from the 1990s: about 765 people were registered here in 1991, about 1,650 in 2000 and about 2,350 in 2010, which suggests that much of the housing is fairly recent.

Questions buyers ask

Is Port Adriano the same place as El Toro?

Port Adriano is the marina at the foot of El Toro, and its postal address is El Toro, 07180 Calvià. The homes, shops and beach around it are El Toro.

Which municipality is El Toro in?

Calvià. The town hall is in Calvià Vila, inland, and the councillor responsible for El Toro and Port Adriano holds office hours on Wednesdays at the El Toro cultural centre.

Can you dive or fish around the Illa del Toro?

The island is in a marine reserve, first protected in 2004 and enlarged since. In the high-protection zone fishing is restricted, jet skis are banned and group scuba diving follows set rules, so check the Balearic government’s reserve regulations before you go.

Is El Toro lived in all year?

Yes. About 2,400 people are registered as residents, and Port Adriano holds events in the colder months too, including a Christmas funfair and a Three Kings afternoon in early January.

How far is El Toro from Palma?

About 23 kilometres to the Cathedral by road, roughly 30 minutes by car outside rush hour via the Ma-1 motorway. TIB buses, including line 106, run between El Toro and Palma.
