Living here

Vilafranca de Bonany is a country town of about 3,900 people on the Palma–Manacor road, on the eastern side of the Pla, Mallorca’s central farming plain. Known across the island for its dry-farmed melons, it has a health centre with round-the-clock urgent care and frequent buses to Palma. It is a working town with life all year round, and Manacor is 15 minutes away.

Vilafranca lies among fields between Petra, Porreres, Sant Joan, Felanitx and Manacor. It grew from a settlement for the farm workers of the Sant Martí barony, authorised in 1620, and its name comes from villa franca, a medieval term for a new town granted tax breaks. It became a municipality separate from Petra early in the 19th century, after a long dispute. The words de Bonany were added in 1916, after the sanctuary on the nearby Puig de Bonany (317 m), a hill where Vilafranca’s boundary meets those of Petra and Sant Joan. The singer-songwriter Tomeu Penya was born here, and a square bears his name.

Farming still shapes the place. Most of the land is dry-farmed (secà), with cereals, almonds, figs and apricots, and the unirrigated melons the town is known for, grown for sale since the years after the Civil War. In summer, stalls along the old main road sell melons, bunches of ramellet tomatoes and peppers. On the first weekend of September the Festa i Fira del Meló, a festival more than 50 years old, brings contests for the biggest and the best melon, an auction of Mallorcan black pigs and a night fair of crafts and local produce. Clay dug from pits around the town has long supplied local tile works.

For its size, Vilafranca is well served. The health centre on Carrer Joan Miró is the hub for Ariany, Montuïri, Petra, Porreres and Sant Joan, and its out-of-hours unit covers nights and weekends. The town has a pharmacy, a couple of supermarkets, a bank and a small Wednesday morning market in the centre. The old rectory holds the library and a municipal theatre of about 200 seats, and the Es Molí Nou sports centre has a pool, tennis, padel and football. Rubbish is collected door to door. The Ma-15 dual carriageway between Palma and Manacor runs just south of the town, keeping most through traffic out of the centre.

Festivals fill the year. On the eve of Sant Antoni, 16 January, bonfires burn around the town, the main one in the Plaça Major, and animals are blessed the next day. On the first Tuesday after Easter people walk up the Puig de Bonany. The Festes de la Beata take up the last week of July, and Santa Bàrbara, the patron saint, is honoured on 4 December with mass and bunyols (doughnuts) served with muscatel. In October the town hosts FIET, the Balearic children’s and youth theatre fair, with dozens of shows in halls, streets and squares. With little tourism, winter is quieter but the town does not empty.

Who buys here

The most common surnames are Barceló, Sansó, Bauçà, Nicolau and Mascaró. After falling to about 2,150 in 1991, the population has grown to about 3,900, helped by the town’s services, the short drive to Manacor and newcomers who came for work in farming and industry. Vilafranca suits families and couples who want a working Mallorcan town with a school and a doctor at hand, and fields at the end of the street.

Property

Almost everyone lives in the town. In the compact centre around the Plaça Major and the parish church, houses, shops and cafés stand close together, while homes towards the edge of town look out more onto the fields. In 1925 the town hall bought land from neighbouring Sant Joan, where part of the town had spread. Beyond the town, fields surround farmhouses and old estates (possessions) such as sa Franquesa, es Castellot and sa Vinya Nova, formed when the Sant Martí lands were split up in the early 20th century. The manor of Sant Martí d’Alenzell, 1 km south of town, is private and listed as a Bé d’Interès Cultural.

Questions buyers ask

Can I get to Palma without a car?

Yes. TIB bus 401, between Cala Millor, Manacor and Palma, stops in the town about every half hour on weekdays, and the ride to Palma’s Estació Intermodal takes about 45 to 50 minutes. In season (in 2026, from 27 March to 31 October) the A42 airport bus also stops here, but boarding towards the airport must be booked by 9 pm the day before.

What is the melon fair?

The Festa i Fira del Meló, on the first weekend of September, celebrates the dry-farmed melons the town is known for, and the festival has run for more than 50 years. There are contests for the biggest and the best melon, an auction of Mallorcan black pigs, an animal show and a night fair with crafts and local produce.

What medical care is there?

The health centre on Carrer Joan Miró opens from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Thursday and until 3 pm on Friday, and its out-of-hours unit (PAC) covers nights and weekends. It also serves Ariany, Montuïri, Petra, Porreres and Sant Joan. The public Hospital de Manacor is about 15 minutes by car.

Where do children go to school?

The municipal nursery, Cucarells, takes under-threes, and the state school CEIP Es Cremat teaches ages 3 to 12. For compulsory secondary education (ESO, ages 12 to 16), pupils go to IES Porreres, about 15 minutes away. The adult education centre CEPA Es Pla, in town, also runs vocational courses in health and care.

What should I check before buying or building?

The town hall lists its Normes Subsidiàries, in a consolidated text approved in 1997, as the planning rules in force, and an update to fit the island’s territorial plan was given initial approval in 2015; the planning office gives free advice every other Thursday morning by appointment. Building works need a licence or prior notice from the town hall. For holiday letting, buy a property that already holds a licence: no new apartments can be registered in Mallorca, and new places for houses are limited and sold by the Consell de Mallorca.
