Living here

Selva is an old village at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, about 10 minutes north of Inca and 40 minutes from Palma. It is the seat of a municipality that also takes in Caimari, Moscari, Biniamar and the hamlet of Binibona. With a Gothic church, a Wednesday market and a primary school, it offers everyday village life between the mountains and the plain.

Selva was first recorded as a farmstead (alqueria) in 1232, and King Jaume II founded it as a town (vila) in 1300. It is traditionally divided into three quarters: Camarata, Valella and es Puig. The parish church of Sant Llorenç looks down from the top of a stone staircase of 42 steps. The decision to build it came in 1301 and work went on into the 16th century, and its Gothic façade dates from then. After a fire in 1855 the church was rebuilt to its 17th-century plans, and it has been a protected monument since 1978. About 2,300 of the municipality’s 4,300 or so residents live in the village.

On Wednesday mornings, from 8:00 to 13:00, a market sets up in the Plaça Major, with stalls of fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, clothes and shoes. The village has a pharmacy, a public health unit open on weekdays, a municipal nursery, the state infant and primary school CEIP Es Putxet, and a public library with a youth information point. The patron saint, Sant Llorenç, is celebrated on 10 August. The Camarata quarter holds its Fira de la Creu on 3 May, and on the second weekend of June the Fira de ses Herbes brings stalls of medicinal and aromatic plants to the square after a week of events.

The Ma-2130, the road from Inca up to Lluc, runs through the east side of the village. Near it, the old fountains of Camarata and Valella, reached down stone steps, stand by the old pilgrims' route to the monastery, which is 20 to 25 minutes' drive away through Caimari. On a hill towards Mancor de la Vall are the remains of the Crist Rei hermitage, built in 1927 on the walls of a Talayotic settlement and abandoned in the 1960s after nearby mining made the ground shift. Inca, with its hospital, larger shops and trains to Palma, is about 10 minutes away, and TIB buses run there through the day.

Who buys here

After falling to about 2,870 in the 1980s and 1990s, the municipality’s population has grown again. Selva suits families who want a school and a market within walking distance, people who work in Inca or commute to Palma, and foreign buyers after a lived-in Mallorcan village close to the Tramuntana, with a hospital and a train station 10 minutes away.

Property

The old quarters of Camarata, Valella and es Puig are made up of traditional stone village houses on narrow streets that climb towards the church, among them several larger old houses from the 17th to 19th centuries. Old estates and country houses stand in the farmland around the village. Selva has no approved general plan of its own: urban land follows interim regional rules dating from 1999, and rustic land falls under the Mallorca island plan. A municipal catalogue approved in 2020 also protects many old houses in the village and estates in the countryside, so check with an architect what you can build or change before you buy.

Questions buyers ask

Can I reach Palma by public transport?

Yes, with a change in Inca. TIB bus 313 runs a loop from Inca through Selva, Moscari and Caimari, and line 312 between Lluc, Inca and Muro also stops in the village. On the timetable in force since November 2025, about a dozen buses a day leave Selva for Inca bus station on weekdays, fewer at weekends, taking 12 to 20 minutes. Trains to Palma leave from the station next door.

What medical care is there?

The public health unit on Carrer Germanes Sastre Font opens on weekdays from 8:00 to 15:00, closing at noon on Wednesdays. At night and at weekends, urgent care is at its parent centre, So na Monda in Inca, and the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca is about 10 minutes' drive.

Are there planning restrictions to know about?

Selva has no approved general plan of its own, so interim regional rules apply in the village and the Mallorca island plan in the countryside. A catalogue of protected buildings, approved in 2020, covers many village houses and country estates. In February 2026 the Consell de Mallorca and the town hall signed an agreement for the Consell to draft a general plan for the municipality. Have an architect check what is allowed before you commit.

When is the market?

Every Wednesday from 8:00 to 13:00 in the Plaça Major, where the parish church stands, with fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, clothes and shoes.
