Living here

Below the hilltop sanctuary of Consolació, S’Alqueria Blanca is a village of about 1,000 people, 5 km from Santanyí town on the road to Portopetro and Cala d’Or. A state primary school, a GP unit and a Tuesday market keep it going all year, and Cala Mondragó is about 10 minutes away, a good mix for families who want village life near the coast.

The village sits on a low rise at the foot of the Puig de Consolació, between Santanyí town and Portopetro. Its name, which translates as 'the white farmstead', is recorded as early as 1242. People began settling the surrounding fields in the late 16th century, as the threat of pirate raids eased, and the Torre d’en Timoner, a tower with Renaissance windows, dates from that time. By 1789 there were 73 buildings, and the church of Sant Josep was finished in 1863. On the 205-metre hill above, the simply built Consolació sanctuary looks out over the whole municipality and its coastline.

About 1,000 people are registered here, and the village keeps its own everyday services, with shops, bars and restaurants. A market, mainly fruit and vegetables, is held in the Plaça de Sant Josep on Tuesday mornings. The state primary school, CEIP Mare de Déu de la Consolació, sends its pupils on to IES Santanyí, the secondary school in Santanyí town. A public GP unit opens on three days a week, and the health centre in Santanyí, about 10 minutes away, covers the rest with its out-of-hours service. The fiestas are Sant Antoni in January, Sant Josep, the patron saint, on 19 March and Sant Roc in mid-August.

The coast is close. Cala Mondragó, in the Mondragó Natural Park, is about 10 minutes by car, as is the small harbour of Portopetro, and Cala d’Or is 10 to 15 minutes away. The drawback is the Ma-19, which carries the traffic for Portopetro and Cala d’Or through the centre along Carrer des Convent, under four metres wide in places. Coaches, hire cars and delivery lorries all squeeze through, and in 2016 the local press reported jams in high season. The Consell de Mallorca has approved a bypass and was buying the land for it in autumn 2026, but until it is built the traffic stays in the village.

Who buys here

Families who want a state primary school in the village are well served here, as are buyers who would rather live in a working village than a resort, with Santanyí town and the coves a short drive away. The countryside between here, Calonge, Es Carritxó and Cas Concos even has an ironic nickname, the Hamburger Hügel (Hamburg Hill), after the well-off Germans, many from around Hamburg, who settled there.

Property

The older houses stand close together on uneven ground in the centre, where homes began to cluster in the early 17th century. Around the village are quarries of pedra de Santanyí, the local building stone used across the island. The farmland beyond, traditionally planted with almonds, carobs and vines, has had scattered farmhouses since the fields were first settled. Homes on the main road take the summer traffic, so check how close a house is to the Ma-19 and to the planned bypass. On rural land, have an architect confirm what Santanyí’s Normes Subsidiàries allow, and check any holiday-let licence, as new ones are tightly limited.

Questions buyers ask

How far is the sea?

A few kilometres. The village lies inland between Santanyí town and Portopetro, and Cala Mondragó and the harbour at Portopetro are each about 10 minutes by car.

Is there a school in the village?

Yes, a state primary school, CEIP Mare de Déu de la Consolació. Pupils then go on to IES Santanyí, the state secondary school in Santanyí town.

How bad is the traffic through the village?

The Ma-19 to Portopetro and Cala d’Or runs through the centre on a street under four metres wide in places, so in high season, when coaches and lorries head for the resorts, it can jam. A bypass has been approved and its land was being bought in 2026, but it is not built yet, so look at how close a house is to the main road and to the bypass route.

Which buses stop here?

TIB line 515 stops here all year between Cala d’Or and Campos, the interchange for line 501 to Palma and the A51 to the airport. From late March to October, line 515e runs direct to Palma’s intermodal station.

When is the village GP unit open?

On Mondays and Tuesdays from 8am to 3pm and on Thursdays from 1pm to 8pm. The Santanyí health centre, about 10 minutes away, covers the other hours, with urgent care on weeknights and at weekends, and the public hospital is in Manacor, about 35 minutes by car.
