Living here

Built from the 1960s around a sheltered cove of white sand, Cala Santanyí is a small resort a short drive south of Santanyí town, between Cala Figuera and Cala Llombards. The water is usually calm and the town’s services are about 10 minutes away, so it works well as a holiday or second home by the beach.

The beach lies at the head of a deep, sheltered inlet, where a torrent, one of the island’s seasonal streams, reaches the sea. It is small, about 70 metres of white sand, and it shelves gently. Because the inlet is deep, the water is usually calm, which suits families with young children, and the town hall provides lifeguards in the bathing season. In summer it fills up quickly. There is parking close to the beach and in the streets around it.

A short walk south of the beach, the Mirador des Pontàs looks out over es Pontàs, a rock arch about 20 metres high standing in the sea between Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards. In September 2007 Chris Sharma made the first ascent of a route on the arch, climbing above the sea without ropes; at the time it was rated among the hardest of its kind in the world. On the eastern side of the inlet stands the Torre Nova de sa Roca Fesa, a 17th-century tower built against pirate raids and now a listed monument. In October 2026 the town hall organised its second wine-tasting evening there.

About 400 people, counting the houses of Son Moja just inland, were registered as living here in 2025, and outside the summer the resort is very quiet. Daily life leans on Santanyí town, about 10 minutes away by car, which has supermarkets, schools, a Wednesday and Saturday morning market and the public health centre, with out-of-hours urgent care at night and at weekends. The area’s public hospital, in Manacor, is about 40 minutes away. Bus 516 runs all year, about every two hours, linking Cala Santanyí with Cala Figuera, Santanyí town and Campos, where you change for Palma or the airport.

Who buys here

Cala Santanyí is above all a summer resort, with a small year-round population. Couples and retirees who want a calm beach within walking distance, and don’t mind driving into Santanyí for most errands, will be at home here, and so will families who come for the summer, as the sheltered water is good for children.

Property

In the 1920s there were only a few houses and fishermen’s huts here. Building began in the 1960s, and a hotel went up in 1961. Today the resort is a mix of private houses, apartment buildings and a few hotels around the cove. Inland, towards Santanyí town, Son Moja is a separate area of detached family houses, built from the 1980s. With no old village core, almost all the housing dates from the 1960s onwards. Before buying to let, confirm the holiday-rental licence, and before planning an extension, ask an architect what Santanyí’s planning rules allow.
