Living here

Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena are two small resort neighbourhoods on Mallorca’s south-east coast, in the municipality of Felanitx, where the built-up coast runs on from Cala d’Or. Each sits around a little cove among pines, with villas, apartments and hotels, and only 394 people were registered here in 2025. A home here puts a sandy cove within walking distance and Cala d’Or’s shops and marina a few minutes away.

The two places lie at the eastern edge of the Cala d’Or resort, where the coast passes from Santanyí into Felanitx, and the three form one continuous holiday area. A single inlet splits into two coves. Cala Ferrera, the larger, has a beach of fine white sand about 60 metres long, shallow water, a small islet called the Faralló at its mouth and traditional boathouses on the rocks either side. It has sunbed hire, toilets, showers, a bar and a lifeguard post, plus ramps and an amphibious chair for disabled bathers. Cala Serena is a tiny, quieter cove about 40 metres long, with rocky edges and no lifeguard post.

Cala d’Or next door has several supermarkets, the marina and most everyday services. Cala Ferrera itself has a pharmacy, a private medical centre and a tourist office, but no public GP unit. Felanitx’s GP units are in S’Horta, Portocolom and Cas Concos, attached to the Felanitx town health centre, where urgent care runs at night and at weekends. The closest, in S’Horta about 10 minutes away, opens on Mondays and Thursdays from 8am to 3pm. Cala d’Or’s unit is nearer but belongs to Santanyí’s health centre. Hospital cases go to Manacor.

Hotels set the rhythm. The town hall puts Cala Ferrera’s hotel capacity at about 4,000 places, many times the number of registered residents, and like Cala d’Or the area is busy in summer and much quieter out of season. Line 515 stops here all year on its way to Campos, and from spring to the end of October extra buses run direct to Palma and to Portocolom and Porto Cristo. Cala Sa Nau, a sandy cove among pines, is a short way up the coast, Portopetro is about 10 minutes away and Portocolom about 20.

Who buys here

Few people live here all year, and the area works best as a holiday base, or for retired couples content to walk to the cove and rely on Cala d’Or for shopping and services. Neither place has a school of its own, so families face a daily school run.

Property

Both places are holiday developments of the 1960s and 70s. Cala Serena was laid out from 1966 under a partial plan, and single-family houses make up most of it. Cala Ferrera’s development was approved in 1970 and 1973, and the land around the cove is now fully built up, with villas half-hidden among the surviving Aleppo pines alongside hotels and apartment complexes. A nearby development, Ses Sivines de Baix, was approved in 1986. Because the area runs straight on from Cala d’Or, check whether a home is in Felanitx or Santanyí, as planning rules and local taxes follow the town hall, and confirm any holiday-let licence.

Questions buyers ask

Is Cala Ferrera part of Cala d’Or?

On the ground it runs straight on from Cala d’Or, and the two are usually treated as one resort. But Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena belong to Felanitx, while Cala d’Or is in Santanyí, so planning rules and local taxes follow the Felanitx town hall.

How many people live here all year?

Very few. In 2025, 242 people were registered in Cala Ferrera and 152 in Cala Serena. The town hall puts Cala Ferrera’s hotel capacity at about 4,000 places, so in summer far more people stay here than live here.

Where is the nearest public doctor?

Felanitx’s closest public GP unit is in S’Horta, about 10 minutes away, open on Mondays and Thursdays from 8am to 3pm, and the health centre in Felanitx town opens every weekday and runs urgent care on weeknights and at weekends. Cala d’Or’s public GP unit is closer but belongs to Santanyí’s health centre, so check which unit you are assigned to when you register. The public hospital is in Manacor.

What buses run from here?

Line 515 stops at Cala Ferrera-Cala Serena all year and runs to Campos, where you change for line 501 to Palma or the A51 to the airport. From late March to the end of October, line 515e runs direct to Palma’s intermodal station. Buses coming back end at the Cala Esmeralda stop in Cala d’Or, a short walk away.

Which schools are nearest?

Neither place has a school. Within Felanitx, the nearest state primary is CEIP Reina Sofia in S’Horta, which feeds IES Felanitx, the secondary school in Felanitx town. Cala d’Or’s primary school, Santa Maria del Mar, is closer but in Santanyí, so ask the Balearic education department which school zone applies.
