Living here

Named after the area’s salt pans, Ses Salines is an inland town of about 2,200 people that holds its municipality’s town hall, among almond groves and orchards in Mallorca’s far south, 50 to 55 minutes from Palma. Colònia de Sant Jordi is about 10 minutes away and Es Trenc 10 to 15: the beaches are close, but you live outside the resort.

The town lies about 4.5 km inland, on a plateau with views of the sea and the island of Cabrera. It grew up around the houses of Can Bonico and Sa Carrotja and became a parish in 1913. The railway from Palma reached it in 1917, on its way to Santanyí, and in 1925 the town broke away from Santanyí to become a municipality of its own. The line closed in 1964. With 2,230 registered residents in 2025, the town is smaller than Colònia de Sant Jordi, the coastal half of the municipality, but the town hall is here, on the Plaça Major.

Roman troops set up a fort here after the conquest of the island in 123 BC, and a stretch of its defensive ditch, known locally as la síquia, can be seen through a glass panel on Carrer de la Pau. A self-guided route with QR codes explains the finds. Just south of the town, along Carrer des Torrent, is Els Antigors, a listed Talaiotic site that includes the talaiot known as Sa Talaia Joana and is open all year. The Can Barberà defence tower stands beside the parish church of Sant Bartomeu, and the old church, on Plaça Sant Bartomeu, now holds exhibitions and the tourist office.

Day to day, the town has a pharmacy, a supermarket, a petrol station at the entrance from Campos, a state primary school, a municipal nursery and a library in the old school building on Plaça d’Espanya. The public GP unit on Carrer Na Bergues opens on weekday mornings, and from 1pm to 8pm on Tuesdays. Out of hours, residents go to Campos for urgent care, and the hospital is in Manacor. A small weekly market is held on the Plaça Major on Thursday mornings.

Sant Antoni in January brings bonfires and the blessing of animals, and the 1 May fair brings stalls, local food and a horse show, with fair events spread over about three weeks. Sant Bartomeu, the patron saint, is celebrated on 24 August, followed by the Festa del Cavall horse parade. In early October the ArtinSal art night fills the central streets, squares and old church with work by dozens of artists. Colònia de Sant Jordi, with its harbour, beaches and seasonal boats to Cabrera, is about 10 minutes south-west. The town is named after the area’s salt pans, and those still worked today lie on Colònia’s northern edge.

Who buys here

Colònia de Sant Jordi is the municipality’s resort, while in Ses Salines town the planning rules allow hotels only in the old centre. Several well-known artists live in the municipality, and foreign nationals make up a sizeable minority of its registered residents. The appeal for buyers is a lived-in village with a school, market and GP unit open all year, the beaches about 10 minutes away and Palma within an hour.

Property

The old centre around the Plaça Major and Plaça Sant Bartomeu is zoned for special protection: terraced village houses built up to the street, where new or rebuilt houses must keep the traditional look and have a ground floor and one upper floor, or two upper floors on the main squares and street. The later growth areas around it are also mostly terraced, and the newest edges have detached houses in gardens, limited to two storeys. A few blocks on the south side mix homes with workshops. Bars and restaurants are allowed only on the main squares and streets. Old water-pumping windmills in the surrounding farmland are protected.

Questions buyers ask

Is Ses Salines the same place as Colònia de Sant Jordi?

No. They are the two main settlements of one municipality. Ses Salines is the inland town with the town hall and 2,230 registered residents in 2025, while Colònia de Sant Jordi, about 6 km south-west by road, is the harbour and resort, and the larger of the two.

Does Ses Salines have a beach?

No, the town is about 4.5 km inland. The nearest beaches are at Colònia de Sant Jordi, about 10 minutes by car. Es Trenc begins at the edge of Colònia, and Es Dolç and Es Carbó lie to the east of the village.

Are there summer limits on building work?

Not in the town. The municipal planning rules set no seasonal limits on building work in Ses Salines town or in the countryside, whereas in Colònia de Sant Jordi building work is banned in July and August. The usual permits still apply.

What are the bus links like?

By bus, with a change. TIB line 517 runs all year from the town to Santanyí, Colònia de Sant Jordi and Campos, where line 501 continues to Palma and the A51 to the airport. There is no direct service, and daily life is far simpler with a car.
