Living here

Mallorca’s southernmost harbour is at Colònia de Sant Jordi, a seaside village and resort in Ses Salines, about 55 minutes from Palma. Es Trenc beach starts at its edge, and boats leave for the Cabrera national park. With about 3,000 registered residents it has a life beyond summer, and it is an easy choice for beach lovers, sailors and anyone after a relaxed village by the sea.

Colònia occupies a small headland on the south coast, about 6 km by road south-west of Ses Salines, the inland town that holds the town hall. It began as a small fishing settlement called Port de Campos. From 1879 the Marquès del Palmer promoted an agricultural colony here, settling farmers on the land, and the place took its present name. Tourism arrived from the 1940s and turned it into a resort. In 2025 it had 2,971 registered residents, a little more than half the municipality, and the population rises sharply in summer. It has had its own district council since 2002.

Beaches start at the village edge. Es Trenc, a long white beach backed by protected dunes in the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos natural park, runs north-west from there. In the village are the harbour beach, Platja des Estanys and Cala Galiota, a small urban cove used mostly by locals. To the east lie Es Dolç and, further on and reached only on foot, Es Carbó, which has no facilities. The harbour, run by the Balearic ports authority, has a fishing quay and leisure berths. In season, boats leave daily for Cabrera, a national park since 1991, and its visitor centre, with aquariums, is in the village.

Avinguda Primavera, lined with bars, is one of the liveliest streets, and on summer evenings people stroll round the harbour. The village has food shops, a pharmacy, a petrol station, a library, a state primary school and a municipal nursery. The public GP unit is open on weekdays until 3pm, and until 8pm on Thursdays. At other times residents go to Campos for urgent care, and the hospital is in Manacor. A weekly market is held on Wednesday afternoons. Sant Jordi, the patron, is celebrated in April, Sant Joan’s eve brings a correfoc (fire run) at Cala Galiota, and the summer festes fall in late July or early August.

Es Trenc draws big crowds in summer, and parking there is paid. In winter the village is much quieter and some hotels close, the first reopening around February, but the school, GP unit and library carry on. The salt pans on the northern edge of the village are still harvested by traditional methods each August, and flamingos are often seen on them. Ses Salines town, with its big 1 May fair, is about 10 minutes away, and Campos and Santanyí about 20. A coastal path runs east past Es Dolç and Es Carbó to the Cap de ses Salines lighthouse.

Who buys here

Many homes are second homes for people from Palma, Campos and other nearby towns. Alongside them live year-round residents, including families with children at the village school, and foreign nationals make up a sizeable minority of the municipality’s registered population. Buyers get a low-key beach village with Es Trenc and boating on the doorstep, and need to be comfortable with a much quieter winter.

Property

The original village core is zoned for special protection, with terraced houses built up to the street. Around it, the later growth areas are mostly terraced too, mixing family houses with small blocks of flats. Newer districts on the edges have detached houses in private gardens, generally up to three storeys. Hotel use is confined to zoned plots, some in the former El Coto development and others scattered through the village. Most of the village grew with tourism after the 1940s, and the land around it is rural or protected. Building work is restricted in summer.

Is Colònia bigger than Ses Salines?

Yes. Ses Salines, about 6 km inland, has the town hall, but Colònia de Sant Jordi is the larger of the two: 2,971 registered residents in 2025 against 2,230 in Ses Salines town.

Is Colònia de Sant Jordi quiet in winter?

Yes, much quieter than in summer, and some hotels close until around February. The primary school, GP unit and library stay open for the people who live here all year.

Can I renovate a house during the summer?

Only in a limited way. Under the Ses Salines planning rules, no building work of any kind is allowed in the village in July and August, apart from urgent repairs, and excavation, foundations and structural work are banned from 15 April to 15 October. Plan bigger projects for the winter.

Can I rely on buses?

Not for daily life. Line 517 runs all year from the village to Ses Salines, Santanyí and Campos, where you can change for line 501 to Palma or the A51 to the airport. There is no direct service, so a car makes life much easier.
