Living here

Sa Ràpita (La Rápita) and the neighbouring hamlet of Ses Covetes lie on Mallorca’s south coast in the municipality of Campos, where the long sands of Es Trenc begin, about 45–50 minutes from Palma. Sa Ràpita is a quiet residential village with a marina and no hotels. For a beach home beside protected coast it is a good choice, as long as you can live with crowded summers.

Sa Ràpita sits at the head of the bay that shares its name, about 11 km south-west of Campos town, where the town hall is. Campos was a farming town that kept its back to the sea, and the village only began in the early 20th century, when Campos families put up summer houses and boat sheds on the low, rocky shore. It grew in stages until it reached the Llucmajor boundary to the west, where about 300 metres of open land still separate it from Son Bieló. The Torre de Son Durí, a watchtower built in 1595 against pirate raids and now a listed monument, stands by the marina.

East of the Club Nàutic marina the shore turns sandy. The beach of Sa Ràpita runs for about 1.1 km, backed by dunes and pine woods, and smaller sandy stretches lead on to Ses Covetes, a hamlet that began in the second half of the 19th century as a summer retreat for families from Campos and Porreres. Beyond it Es Trenc runs on towards Colònia de Sant Jordi, and you can walk along the shore all the way there. The coast between Sa Ràpita and Colònia is protected as the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos natural park, declared in 2017. Westerly winds can bring dangerous currents off Es Trenc.

The village is quiet and residential. Besides restaurants and a few small shops, it has a civic centre, a sports centre, tennis courts, playgrounds, the church of Santa Coloma and a recycling point. The town hall lists morning markets in Plaça de ses Palmeres on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A public GP unit opens from 8am to 3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while the health centre with out-of-hours urgent care and the schools are in Campos, about 15 minutes away. The festes for the Mare de Déu del Carme, around 16 July, include a procession at sea.

In 2025, 1,156 people were registered in Sa Ràpita, 134 in adjoining Dalt sa Ràpita and 94 in Ses Covetes. In summer the population more than doubles with holidaymakers and visitors from Campos and the rest of Mallorca, and the beaches fill up. Out of season it is much quieter, and winter is when the biggest storms roll in on south-westerly winds. Bus 508 runs all year, weekends included, to Palma’s intermodal station via Llucmajor and Son Llàtzer hospital, a trip of a little over an hour. The 518 to Campos runs far less often in winter.

Who buys here

Sa Ràpita began as the seaside retreat of Campos families, and in summer people from Campos and the rest of Mallorca still swell its numbers. About 1,400 people are registered as residents across the village and Ses Covetes. Buyers after a beach house or a sailing base on a quiet, hotel-free stretch of coast are well matched, as are families happy to drive to Campos for school. Anyone looking for nightlife or a lively winter will find it too sleepy.

Property

Almost everything here was built in the 20th century or later. The village grew from modest summer houses on old estates such as Son Durí and Ca n’Estela, then spread through Son Catlar and sa Vinyola and, late in the century, es Tancat towards Llucmajor. There is no old fishing quarter, and Ses Covetes is a small cluster beside the natural park. The shore falls under Spain’s Coastal Law: most of the old boat sheds were pulled down around 2000, and at Ses Covetes an unfinished apartment complex, ruled illegal by the courts, was demolished in 2013. Have a lawyer check the legal status of any home near the sea.

Is Sa Ràpita in Campos or Llucmajor?

Sa Ràpita and Ses Covetes are in Campos, whose town hall is in Campos town about 15 minutes inland. On its western side the village reaches the Llucmajor boundary, and Son Bieló next door is in Llucmajor, so check which municipality a house on that edge falls in.

Can I get to Palma without a car?

Yes. TIB line 508 runs all year, weekends included, from Sa Ràpita to Palma’s intermodal station via Llucmajor and Son Llàtzer hospital, taking a little over an hour. Line 518 links the village with Campos, but in winter it runs only a few times a day, so check the current timetable before relying on it.

How far are the doctor, schools and hospital?

A public GP unit in Sa Ràpita opens on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 3pm. Campos, about 15 minutes away, has the health centre with out-of-hours urgent care, primary schools and the IES Damià Huguet secondary school. For hospital care, residents drive 40–45 minutes to Manacor.

Can I build or extend close to the beach?

Be careful. The shore falls under Spain’s Coastal Law, and most of the old boat sheds here were demolished under it around the turn of the century. At Ses Covetes, an apartment complex begun in the early 1990s was ruled illegal and finally demolished in 2013, so have a lawyer and an architect check plans and paperwork before you buy.

How busy does it get in summer?

Very. The population more than doubles, Es Trenc draws huge crowds, and parking near Ses Covetes has long been a problem. Out of season the village and its beaches are far quieter.
