Living here

On the road from Santanyí town to Ses Salines, Es Llombards is a farming village of just under 600 people. Its coastal offshoot, Cala Llombards, is a villa area around a sandy cove about 10 minutes' drive away. Both are 55 to 60 minutes from Palma and offer peace, space and coves close at hand.

Es Llombards lies on low, gently rolling farmland on the Ma-6100, about 3.5 km from both Santanyí town and Ses Salines. A farmstead here is recorded in the 14th century, and the village grew up in the 17th century around communal water basins. Almonds, cereals and sheep were its living, and the population peaked at 638 in 1950 before falling as farming declined. The church began as an 18th-century oratory to the Immaculate Conception and became a parish in 1969, with a modern building by the architect Antoni Alomar. Among the older buildings is the fortified house of Son Amer, with a 16th-century defence tower.

Village life is low-key. Es Llombards has its own state infant and primary school, CEIP Sant Domingo, a Thursday morning market of fruit, vegetables and a few crafts in Plaça des Pou, and a GP unit that opens on Thursday mornings only. The health centre, the secondary school and the bigger Wednesday and Saturday market are in Santanyí town, about 5 minutes away. The village celebrates Sant Domingo on 8 August and its patron feast, the Immaculate Conception, on 8 December. Its land stretches south to Cap de ses Salines, the southernmost point of Mallorca.

Cala Llombards was long a small summer spot for families from the village. The first house went up in the early 1960s, and from 1969 land of the old Son Amer estate was divided into plots for detached houses. The small beach of fine white sand lies at the head of a deep, narrow inlet between cliffs, with a lifeguard and sunbeds for hire in the bathing season. It opens to the east and south-east, which makes it the least sheltered of Santanyí’s coves. A short walk away, the Mirador des Pontàs looks out over Es Pontàs, a natural rock arch in the sea between Cala Llombards and Cala Santanyí.

South-west of the cove, beside the few houses of s’Almunia (also spelt s’Almonia), lies Caló des Moro, about half an hour’s walk from Cala Llombards. Social media has made this small cove famous, and in peak season it can draw thousands of people a day. It sits on private land that its owners keep open to the public, with no toilets or rubbish collection. Traffic is a long-running problem: in 2022 the town hall made twenty streets of Cala Llombards residents-only for cars from May to October, and in 2025 it commissioned a university study of how many visitors the cove can take.

Who buys here

Es Llombards has just under 600 registered residents, and almond groves, cereal fields and sheep still surround it. Since the 1960s, foreigners have bought country estates in the area as second homes, and Cala Llombards is mainly a place of second homes. The pair suit buyers who put a quiet village or a house near the sea, with Santanyí’s services a short drive away, ahead of nightlife or shops on the doorstep.

Property

Es Llombards is small, built up over about 26 hectares on either side of the Santanyí to Ses Salines road, with village houses in its streets and country houses and old estates, known as possessions, in the farmland around it. Cala Llombards was laid out from 1969 for detached houses and was built up heavily, with little planning, in the 1970s and 80s. On rural land in particular, ask an architect and a lawyer what Santanyí’s Normes Subsidiàries, first approved in 1985 and amended since, allow you to build or extend, and confirm any holiday-let licence before you buy.

Questions buyers ask

Are Es Llombards and Cala Llombards the same place?

They are two separate places. Es Llombards is the inland village on the road between Santanyí and Ses Salines, and Cala Llombards is a villa area around a beach on the coast, about 6 km away or 10 minutes by car. Both belong to the municipality of Santanyí.

How busy does Caló des Moro get?

Very busy in summer. Social media has made the small cove famous, there have been long queues to get down to it, and in peak season it can draw thousands of people a day. It is about half an hour’s walk from Cala Llombards and has no toilets or rubbish collection, so go early or out of season.

Is there a doctor in Es Llombards?

On Thursday mornings only, when the GP unit opens. The Santanyí health centre, about 5 minutes away, is open on weekdays and provides urgent care at nights and weekends, and the public hospital is in Manacor, about 35 to 40 minutes by car.

Do children have to leave the village for school?

Not until secondary school. The village has its own state infant and primary school, CEIP Sant Domingo, and older children go to IES Santanyí in Santanyí town, the municipality’s only state secondary school.
