Living here

Strung along the road from Andratx town to Sant Elm, S’Arracó is a small inland village in the municipality of Andratx, at the far western end of Mallorca. It has about 800 residents, a primary school and a Saturday market, and the sea at Sant Elm and Port d’Andratx is about ten minutes away.

The village took shape in the early 18th century around a chapel built by Antoni Ferrandell Verí, who is remembered as its founder. That church, the Sant Crist, dates from 1704 and became a parish in the mid-19th century. A side chapel holds an image of the Virgin brought from the old monastery of La Trapa. In the late 19th century hard times sent many families to France, and the money they sent home paid for modernist houses, most of them on Carrer de França, the main street. Local speech kept French loanwords, such as vatura for a car.

Most houses line the road to Sant Elm, which runs through the middle of the village, and three traditional cafés are where people meet. A small market is held in the main square on Saturday mornings. There is a state primary school, CEIP Els Molins, a public health unit open for a few hours each weekday, a pharmacy and a small grocery, and the old school building is now a cultural centre. For more shops, the main health centre, the secondary school and a Wednesday market, Andratx town is about 3.5 km east.

The village sits in a farming valley between the valleys of Andratx and sa Palomera, among old estates such as Son Joan and Son Castell, mills and water wheels. A popular walk starts near the cemetery and climbs to the ruins of La Trapa, a monastery founded by Trappist monks in 1810 and left in 1820. The estate is now a nature reserve owned and run by the Balearic conservation group GOB, with views over sa Dragonera. Sant Elm, about 5 km west, has a small sandy beach and boats across to the island.

The sports ground at sa Vinya has an artificial pitch used for football and rugby, and a small pool. The village festes begin around Sant Agustí at the end of August and close on 8 September with the Mare de Déu de la Trapa, marked by a procession and the traditional ball de l’oferta.

Who buys here

S’Arracó has a settled, year-round population, which has grown from about 500 in the early 1980s to just under 800 in 2025. It suits people who want neighbours all year, a school and cafés within walking distance and quiet evenings, while keeping the coast and the bigger services of Andratx town close by. Families with young children benefit from having a state primary school in the village itself.

Property

The centre is made up of village houses along Carrer de França and the lanes around the church. Traditional homes here are low, often with a small garden or vegetable plot, and the modernist houses built with money from France stand out on the main street. Around the edges of the village and out in the valley are detached houses, a good number of them with pools, along with the old farm estates (possessions) and country houses that recall its farming past. Most homes line the main road through the village, so it is worth checking how much traffic passes a particular house.

What is the link between S’Arracó and France?

Many families emigrated to France in the late 19th century, and the money they sent home built modernist houses, most of them on Carrer de França, the main street. The connection still shows in the local speech, which uses a number of French loanwords.

What services are there in the village?

Is there a bus to Palma?

Yes, with a change. TIB line 121 between Sant Elm and Andratx stops in the village, and in Andratx town or Port d’Andratx you can change to line 101 for Palma. Without a car, though, everyday errands take planning.

How far is the beach?

Sant Elm, about 5 km west and 10 minutes by car, has a small sandy beach, and boats to the natural park of sa Dragonera leave from its port. Port d’Andratx is a similar distance to the south.
