Living here

Sant Elm (San Telmo in Castilian) is a small seaside village at the far western tip of Mallorca, in the municipality of Andratx, looking across a narrow channel to the island of sa Dragonera. With a sandy beach, boats to Dragonera and only a few hundred registered residents, it is a quiet coastal base for buyers who don’t mind a 40-minute drive to Palma.

The village faces sa Dragonera across a narrow strait, the Freu, a marine reserve since 2016. There are two small beaches, the larger and sandy sa Platja Gran and sa Platja Petita, and pebble coves at Cala es Conills and Cala en Basset. In the Middle Ages the place was called La Palomera, and King Jaume I’s fleet anchored here in 1229 before landing at Santa Ponsa. A sailors' hospital, chapel and tower followed, and that complex, now the Castell de Sant Elm, is privately owned. Until the early 20th century the village lived from fishing.

Boats to sa Dragonera leave from the small port, and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. The island is uninhabited. The Consell de Mallorca bought it in 1987, after a long fight against plans to build on it, and it has been a natural park since 1995, with marked paths to its lighthouses. On the mainland, a track and then a steep path lead in about an hour to La Trapa, an estate with the ruins of a monastery founded by Trappist monks in 1810. The conservation group GOB has owned it since 1980.

About 430 people were registered here in 2025, and most houses are second homes, many of them owned by people from Andratx and S’Arracó. The village has restaurants and bars, a few small shops, a pharmacy and a tourist office. For most other things you drive: S’Arracó, about 10 minutes away, has a part-time health post, a state primary school and a Saturday market, and Andratx town, about 15 minutes away, has the health centre and a Wednesday market. Bus line 121 links the village with S’Arracó, Port d’Andratx and Andratx town. In August, a Moros i Cristians festival recalls a 16th-century pirate raid.

Who buys here

Sant Elm is above all a village of second homes, and only about 430 residents are registered. It appeals most to buyers who want a quiet place by the sea, with walking, swimming and boat trips on the doorstep, rather than the nightlife and facilities of the bigger resorts. Families with school-age children face a daily drive, since the nearest school and doctor are in S’Arracó.

Property

Most of the housing went up between the 1950s and the 1980s, as tourism and second homes spread along the Andratx coast, and cadastral records show little built since 2010. Most buildings are single-family houses, but many of the homes are flats. The largest apartment blocks, mainly from the 1980s, stand on the south side along the road to Cala es Conills, and newer blocks from the early 2000s stand near s’Algar at the north end of the village. The historic Castell de Sant Elm is a protected heritage site in private ownership.

Questions buyers ask

Is Sant Elm the same place as San Telmo?

Yes. Sant Elm is the official Catalan name and San Telmo the Castilian one. The village belongs to the municipality of Andratx, like Andratx town, Port d’Andratx, S’Arracó and Camp de Mar.

Can you live in Sant Elm all year?

Some people do: about 430 residents were registered in 2025, and there are restaurants, a few shops and a pharmacy. Most houses are second homes, though, so the village is quiet in winter. The doctor and schools are in S’Arracó and Andratx town, and the bigger shops in Andratx town.

How do you get to sa Dragonera?

By boat from Sant Elm’s small port, a crossing of about 20 minutes. The island is a natural park owned by the Consell de Mallorca, with marked walking routes to its lighthouses. Check sailings before you go.

Where are the nearest doctors and schools?

S’Arracó, about 10 minutes away, has a part-time health post and the state primary school, CEIP Els Molins. The public health centre is in Andratx town, about 15 minutes away, and Son Espases hospital in Palma is about 40 minutes. The nearest international school is in Calvià, about 30 minutes' drive.

Can I reach Palma by bus?

Yes, with a change. Line 121 runs from Sant Elm through S’Arracó to Port d’Andratx and Andratx, where you can pick up line 101 to Palma. A car is far more practical.
