Living here

Cala Bona grew from a few fishermen’s houses on Mallorca’s east coast into a small harbour resort of hotels and apartments, joined to Cala Millor by a seafront promenade. It belongs to Son Servera, and about 1,330 people were registered here in 2025. Look here for a flat by the sea, a small harbour and a year-round bus, about 75 minutes from Palma.

Before tourism, Cala Bona was a natural harbour where about a dozen fishermen and their families kept their llaüts, the traditional wooden boats, and held lobsters in pens on the rocks. An inn opened in 1924 and later became a hotel, and from the 1960s the place grew with Cala Millor into a resort. The harbour is run directly by Ports IB, the Balearic ports authority. It has 192 berths, 20 of them for visiting boats, and is used mainly by leisure craft, alongside a few fishing boats and boats offering trips out to sea. It has lost depth over the years, and in June 2024 the Balearic government gave a project to dredge it priority status.

The main beach, south of the harbour, is a strip of sand about 550 metres long and 9 metres wide. Between it and the quay are three small man-made coves behind breakwaters, one of them Platja de na Marins. These beaches were made by filling in parts of the shore, and in late 2023 the council said it planned to add fresh sand every year, for which it was seeking permission from Spain’s coastal authority. The main beach has been certified for universal accessibility, and the town hall offers free assisted bathing there from May to October. The promenade runs south to Cala Millor’s long sandy beach, and to the north quieter coves lie towards Port Verd, Port Nou and Costa dels Pins.

There are supermarkets, with a pharmacy close by, and plenty of bars and restaurants around the harbour and along the front. In summer the streets around the harbour are among the busiest in the municipality, and many hotels and businesses close over the winter. The nearest public GP unit is in Cala Millor. Son Servera town, about 10 minutes inland, has the health centre with 24-hour urgent care and a market on Friday mornings, and Manacor, about 25 minutes away, has the public hospital. On 16 July, boats decorated for the Mare de Déu del Carme, patron of Cala Bona and its fishermen, sail out in her honour.

Who buys here

Cala Bona’s registered population rose from about 1,090 in 2005 to about 1,330 in 2025. The resort is popular with British holidaymakers, while neighbouring Cala Millor draws many Germans. Retirees, boat owners and anyone after an apartment by the sea, with shops, restaurants and a year-round bus on foot, will find it practical. Families have a state primary school in Cala Millor and the secondary school in Son Servera.

Property

Before tourism there were only a few fishermen’s houses and an inn, so nearly all the buildings date from the tourist era. Hotels and apartment blocks, many of them four storeys or more, stand along the harbour and the seafront. The streets further back are lower, mostly one or two storeys, with homes, a few hotels and some pools. Expect apartments far more than villas here. For detached houses among pines, Costa dels Pins is about 4 km north by road.

Questions buyers ask

Is Cala Bona a separate place from Cala Millor?

Yes, although the two run into each other. Cala Bona is its own village in the municipality of Son Servera, just north of Cala Millor, and a seafront promenade links them. Cala Millor itself is shared between Son Servera and Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

How easy is life without a car?

More easily than in most of this area. Bus 412 runs all year, roughly once an hour (less often on Sundays), through Cala Bona to Cala Millor, Son Servera and Manacor, where you can take the train to Palma; the direct bus to Palma leaves from Cala Millor. From late March to October the A42 airport bus starts in Cala Bona.

Can I get a berth in the harbour?

Possibly, but not quickly. The harbour has 192 berths, 20 of them for visiting boats. Ports IB allocates the berths for boats based here and keeps a waiting list for them, so if a boat matters to you, ask Ports IB about it before you buy.

Which schools and GP serve Cala Bona?

The state primary school CEIP Na Penyal is in Cala Millor, and the secondary school, IES Puig de sa Font, is in Son Servera. The public GP unit is in Cala Millor, Son Servera’s health centre has urgent care around the clock, and the hospital is in Manacor, about 25 minutes away.

Is Cala Bona busy in winter?

Not very. About 1,330 people are registered here, so it is never deserted, but it is above all a resort: many hotels and businesses close over the winter, while summer brings crowds and pressure on parking.
