Living here

Son Carrió is a village of about 1,180 people in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, set among farmland between Manacor and Mallorca’s east coast. It has a primary school, a Friday market, a church with a Gaudí connection and the island’s railway museum, and Sa Coma and Porto Cristo are 10 to 15 minutes away. It offers everyday village life close to the beaches.

The village sits on a plain of fields and valleys, with isolated hills such as Ses Talaies and the Puig de Son Puça. It takes its name from the Carrió family, who held a large estate here in the 13th century. Growth came after 1860, when much of that estate was split into small plots bought by families from Sant Llorenç and Manacor, and by 1879 there were three long streets and four cross streets. The parish church of Sant Miquel, begun in 1899 and opened in 1907, has a neo-Romanesque front and a fan-shaped rose window. Joan Guasp revised its plans and Antoni Gaudí and Joan Rubió made changes.

Trains on the Manacor to Artà line stopped here from 1921 until 1977. The station buildings were restored in 2011, and in November 2025 the Museu del Ferrocarril de Mallorca opened in the large train shed at the station, telling the story of the island’s railways with projections and a restored carriage. The route from Manacor to Artà, which passes the old station, is now a greenway (via verda) for walking and cycling. Work to reopen the railway began in 2010 but stopped, and there are still calls to bring the trains back.

Village life carries on all year. The market fills Plaça Mossèn Alcover every Friday morning. The former convent houses a day centre and the municipal library, and Ca n’Apol·lònia is the cultural centre. There is a post office and a public health unit. Bonfires mark Sant Antoni in January, the May festes end with a livestock fair, and around Sant Miquel in late September people walk to the old watchtower on Punta de n’Amer. Sa Coma, S’Illot and Porto Cristo are the nearest beaches, and Manacor is 15 to 20 minutes away for bigger shops, the hospital and the train to Palma.

Who buys here

The town hall says the population has grown without a break, to about 1,180 registered residents in 2025. Son Carrió is a village people live in all year, with its own school, a Friday market and festes organised by local associations. It suits buyers who want an ordinary Mallorcan village rather than a resort, with the east-coast beaches a short drive away, and who don’t mind being about an hour from Palma.

Property

The old core is the few streets laid out in the 19th century as the estates were divided, and the village later grew around the church. Catastro records show that most homes are single-family houses, the older ones near the centre and newer ones towards the edges, with few blocks of flats. Outside the village the plain is farmland in small holdings, dotted with farm buildings. If you are looking at a rural plot, have a lawyer check what the planning rules allow. Son Carrió was among the places worst hit by the October 2018 flash flood, so check the official flood maps for any home you look at.

Questions buyers ask

Is Son Carrió a municipality of its own?

No. It belongs to Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, whose town hall is in Sant Llorenç town, about 10 minutes away. The municipality also takes in Sa Coma, part of S’Illot and the southern half of Cala Millor, which it shares with Son Servera.

Is there a school and a doctor in the village?

Yes. CEIP Sant Miquel, on Carrer de l’Estació, teaches infant and primary classes, and the village’s public nursery for under-threes was approved to become part of it from September 2026; there is no secondary school. The health unit is attached to the Llevant health centre in Son Servera, which has urgent care around the clock, and the hospital is in Manacor.

Was Son Carrió affected by the 2018 floods?

Yes. In the flash flood of 9 October 2018 it was among the worst-hit places, with Sant Llorenç and S’Illot, and 13 people died across the area. Check any property against the official Balearic flood maps and ask about its history before buying.

What buses serve the village?

One line: TIB 417 runs all year from Son Carrió to Sant Llorenç and Manacor, where you can catch the train to Palma, and on to Vilafranca and Porreres. For the beaches and most shopping you will want a car.
