Living here

Flat farmland makes up most of sa Pobla (La Puebla in Castilian), a municipality of about 48.5 square kilometres in the north of Mallorca, between Inca and the Bay of Alcúdia. Most of its roughly 15,000 people live in the town, with a small residential area at Crestatx to the north. It offers a market town at the end of the railway from Palma, or a quiet house in the country.

Sa Pobla borders Pollença, Alcúdia, Muro, Llubí, Inca, Búger and Campanet, and has no coast. The land falls into three parts. In the north and north-west are low hills, the last spurs of the Serra de Tramuntana, split by the Vall de Crestatx and barely topping 300 metres. About three-quarters is plain, where the town stands and where the marjal, former marshland towards s’Albufera drained over the centuries, is now irrigated fields. In the east lies a share of s’Albufera itself, a wetland that stays flooded for most of the year and is protected as a natural park.

King Jaume II ordered the founding of the Pobla de Huialfàs in 1300, and by the late 14th century, once Campanet had been split off, its boundaries were close to today’s. The old name lives on in the town’s nursery and other local buildings. A great flood in 1852, remembered as sa plena d’en Gelat, finally set the draining of s’Albufera in motion, and from the middle of the 19th century much of the marsh was turned into farmland. Today the irrigated fields make sa Pobla the island’s main vegetable grower, best known for its potatoes.

Almost everything is in the town. The town hall is on Plaça de la Constitució, and the health centre on Carrer Traginers serves the whole municipality, with urgent care on weekday evenings and nights and from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. The area’s public hospital is in Inca. There are five state primary schools, the Col·legi Sant Francesc d’Assís, two nurseries, the IES Can Peu Blanc secondary school and a vocational training centre. A market is held in the town every Sunday.

The Ma-13 motorway from Palma ends here, about 2 km from the town centre, and the train line from Palma ends at the station on the town’s southern ring road, about an hour from the Estació Intermodal. TIB bus 301 stops at Crestatx and on sa Pobla’s northern ring road on its way between Port de Pollença, Inca and Palma, and line 302 links the town with Alcúdia and the beaches of the bay. Crestatx has no shops, so people there drive into town for daily needs.

The old centre, laid out when the town was founded in 1300, has traditional townhouses around the church and the town hall squares, many built or remodelled in the 19th century. Crestatx is made up of two developments of detached houses on their own plots, Son Toni and s’Ubac, mostly built from the 1970s onwards. Old estates and farmhouses are spread across the farmland, and in recent years homes and warehouses have also gone up on rural land. Since a 2006 change to the town’s planning rules, new houses are not allowed on land classed as ANEI, which covers much of the hill country. On any rural plot, have a lawyer check that everything is legal and registered.

Is the town or Crestatx the better fit?

Live in the town if you want the health centre, schools, shops, market and train within walking distance. Crestatx offers detached houses with gardens in quieter surroundings, but it has no shops, so expect to drive the 5 to 10 minutes into town for everyday needs.

Where would my children go to school?
