Living here

Crestatx is a residential area in the municipality of sa Pobla (La Puebla), about 4 km north of the town centre on the road to Pollença. Two developments of detached houses sit at the foot of low hills, across the road from a church first recorded in the 1280s. A quiet house and garden is the draw, with sa Pobla and the motorway a few minutes away.

Crestatx lies in the north of the municipality, in the small Vall de Crestatx between the Serra de Gaieta and the Puig de Son Vila, where the farmland around sa Pobla meets the first hills. The Torrent de Siurana, a stream that carries little water, runs through the valley towards s’Albufera. The town hall’s history suggests this may be where people first settled in the municipality: amphorae, pottery and coins have been found here, and the name is thought to come from the Latin castra, a camp. That early settlement never grew, and the town took shape on its present site to the south.

The landmark is the church of Santa Margalida de Crestatx. It is recorded from the 1280s but was never a parish, depending first on Campanet and later on sa Pobla. The single-nave Gothic building was given a barrel vault in 1770, and works between 1895 and 1906 lengthened the nave and added the neo-Romanesque front you see today. Inside are a Gothic crucifix and a 16th-century figure of Santa Margalida. On the Tuesday after Easter Sunday the church is the goal of sa Pobla’s romeria, the Pancaritat, when thousands of people picnic on the open ground and in the woods around it.

Today Crestatx is a quiet residential area of two developments, Son Toni and s’Ubac (also written s’Obac). It has a private British-curriculum school, Mallorca International School (MYSCHOOL), but no health centre, so everyday life leans on sa Pobla, 5 to 10 minutes' drive away. The town has the health centre, with urgent care on weeknights and at weekends, five state primary schools, the IES Can Peu Blanc secondary school and the end of the train line from Palma. TIB bus 301 stops here on its way between Pollença, Inca and Palma. The nearest beaches, around Alcúdia, are 15 to 20 minutes away.

Who buys here

Crestatx is a place of family homes rather than a resort, and nobody publishes a breakdown of who lives or buys here. It fits people who want a detached house and garden in quiet surroundings close to a proper town, families using sa Pobla’s schools or the international school in Crestatx itself, and anyone who wants the motorway to Inca and Palma and the beaches around Alcúdia within easy reach.

Property

Most homes are detached houses on their own plots, in the two developments of Son Toni and s’Ubac at the foot of the hills. Cadastre records date most of them from the 1970s onwards, with a busy spell in the 1980s, another in the 2000s and some built since 2010. Most hold a single home, some two. Around them lie hills and farmland with scattered country houses and farm buildings. Outside the two developments the land is rustic, so get a lawyer to confirm that anything built there is legal and registered.
