Living here

Cala Blava and Bellavista are two neighbouring residential estates on the low cliffs of the Llucmajor coast, just south of s’Arenal on the eastern side of the Bay of Palma. Both were planned in 1958 and are mostly detached houses with gardens, plus some small apartment blocks. They suit buyers who want a quiet home by the sea about 20 minutes from the airport and 25 from Palma.

The two estates sit side by side on the coast beyond Son Verí Nou, looking north-west across the bay towards Palma and the Serra de Tramuntana. Cala Blava, the northern one, wraps around the cove of Cala Mosques, which means 'cove of flies'. In 1958 its developers chose the name Cala Blava, 'blue cove', fearing the old one would put buyers off. Bellavista, to the south, was the first residential estate built in Llucmajor, to a design by the Mallorcan architect and planner Gabriel Alomar. The small Caló de Can Mercadal separates the two. The German bandleader Bert Kaempfert died at his holiday home in Cala Blava in 1980.

Cala Mosques, usually just called Cala Blava, is a small cove of fine sand between low cliffs, reached by steps. The seabed shelves gently and there are no sunbeds or parasols. The rest of the shore is mostly rock, with small coves such as Caló Fort in Bellavista, reached by a staircase. The sea here is part of the Bay of Palma marine reserve, created in 1982. To the south the cliffs rise towards Cap Enderrocat, a protected headland whose old coastal fort, begun in the late 1890s, is now a hotel. A seafront promenade of about 3 km runs north through Son Verí Nou to s’Arenal.

There is no village centre. In Cala Blava, social life centres on the beach and a bar near the cove; for almost everything else you head a few minutes north. Son Verí Nou has a supermarket, and s’Arenal has more supermarkets, pharmacies, the Trencadors public health centre (open 24 hours), the Club Nàutic s’Arenal marina and the start of the long sandy Platja de Palma. From Tuesday to Saturday there is a morning market in s’Arenal’s Plaça Major, with a general market on Thursdays, and nearby Les Palmeres has a Saturday market.

Summer and winter feel very different. In July and August the cove is at its busiest and s’Arenal’s hotels and nightlife are in full swing a few minutes away. Each estate holds its own summer fiestas, Bellavista in the second half of July and Cala Blava in August, with sport, music and an open-air dance. In winter the streets are very quiet, especially in Cala Blava, where many houses are used as second homes. TIB bus line 504 stops here on its way between the Llucmajor coast, s’Arenal and Palma’s intermodal station, and the Ma-19 motorway puts the airport and the city within easy reach by car.

Who buys here

People who want a house with a garden near the sea, without resort crowds next door, while staying close to Palma and the airport. Bellavista has shifted from holiday homes to mostly year-round living, while Cala Blava still has many second homes. Families with children at the German school, Eurocampus, about 10 minutes away, are well placed, and so are commuters into Palma.

Property

Most plots hold a detached house with a garden, and many have a pool. Cala Blava also has a number of small apartment blocks of two to four floors, scattered through the estate and including several near the cove, and Bellavista has a few too. Both estates were laid out in 1958 on land from two old country estates, Son Verí de Baix and Son Granada de Baix. Most of Cala Blava’s buildings date from the 1960s and 1970s, while Bellavista is more mixed, with houses added in every decade since. The seaward streets have open views across the bay.

Which schools are nearby?

The closest are a small private cooperative school in Son Verí Nou and, in s’Arenal, two state primary schools, a state secondary school, a state-funded private school and a municipal nursery. The German school Eurocampus is about 10 minutes away. Most British-curriculum schools are in western Palma and Calvià, about 25 to 30 minutes by car.
