Living here

Playa de Muro (Platja de Muro in Catalan) is a beach resort on the Bay of Alcúdia, with some 5 km of fine sand and shallow water backed by dunes, pine woods and the s’Albufera wetlands. It belongs to Muro municipality, though it runs straight on from Platja d’Alcúdia, and Palma is about 55 minutes away. Life follows the summer, so it suits a holiday home better than year-round living.

Muro’s share of the bay is about 5 km long, and the town hall divides it into four stretches. Sector I carries on from Platja d’Alcúdia, and Sector II begins at the Pont dels Anglesos, the bridge over the canal that drains s’Albufera into the sea. Most of the hotels, shops and restaurants are along these two. Further south come the undeveloped, protected dunes of Es Comú and then Ses Casetes des Capellans, a small cluster of houses where Muro meets Can Picafort. Muro town, with the town hall, is 12 to 15 km away by road.

The beach is the main draw. The sand is fine and pale, and the sea stays shallow for a long way, so you wade quite far before you can swim, which is why families like it. Sailing and kitesurf schools work from the busier sectors. Behind the sand are dunes, pines and juniper woods. Es Comú is common land within the s’Albufera natural park. It has no buildings, its pine woods are closed to cars, and it draws far fewer bathers than the hotel stretches. Dead Posidonia seagrass can pile up on the shore in summer, and red flags go up when the waves are high.

Inland, s’Albufera is the largest wetland in the Balearic Islands and has been a natural park since 1988. Entry is free, and flat paths, bird hides and viewing platforms make it easy to explore on foot or by bike. More than 300 bird species have been recorded there, and over 10,000 birds spend the winter, so it is a favourite with birdwatchers. The park’s reception centre is at Sa Roca, a short walk inland from the Pont dels Anglesos.

Fewer than a thousand people are registered as living in Playa de Muro, and in August foreign visitors to the municipality far outnumber residents. A craft market fills the pedestrian part of Avinguda del Mar every evening from mid-May to mid-October, and life follows that summer rhythm. There is no public health unit or school in the resort. Muro town has the municipality’s health centre, schools, supermarkets and a Sunday morning market, and the health centre also runs a small unit in Can Picafort. Alcúdia’s walled old town, with the Roman remains of Pollentia and markets on Tuesdays and Sundays, is 10 to 15 minutes away.

Who buys here

Families with young children like the long, safe beach, and walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers come for s’Albufera. Couples who plan to spend the warmer months here are another natural fit. With so few year-round residents, it is best for people who are happy with a quiet winter or will spend it elsewhere. Those who want village life all year may prefer Muro town or Alcúdia.

Property

Protected land limits how far the resort can spread: the s’Albufera natural park, including the dunes of Es Comú, lies to the south and southwest. The resort grew from the 1960s, and the two busy sectors mix seafront hotels with residential streets. Most homes are in a few areas such as Las Gaviotas, Ses Fotges and Es Braç, where single-family houses sit alongside apartment buildings, mostly built between the 1970s and 1990s. Ses Casetes des Capellans, at the southern end, is a one-off cluster of small houses on the sand. Holiday letting needs a licence, so check its status before you buy.

Questions buyers ask

Is Playa de Muro part of Alcúdia?

No. It belongs to the municipality of Muro, whose town hall is 12 to 15 km away by road. The resort runs straight on from Platja d’Alcúdia with no obvious break, and both lie on the Bay of Alcúdia, so the two are easy to confuse.

How quiet is Playa de Muro in winter?

Very quiet. Life here follows the summer season: the evening craft market, for example, runs only from mid-May to mid-October, and fewer than a thousand people are registered as living here. Muro town and Alcúdia’s old town keep a year-round rhythm.

What about health care and schools?

There is no public health unit or school in the resort itself. The municipality’s health centre is in Muro town, with a smaller unit in Can Picafort, and Muro town also has the schools, including the IES Albuhaira secondary school. The public hospital for the area is the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca, about 25 to 30 minutes by car.

Can I manage without a car?

For summer stays, largely yes. Buses run along the coast towards Alcúdia and Can Picafort and link the resort with Palma and the airport, with more departures in high season. For everyday life all year, a car makes things much easier, because the health centre, schools and weekly market are in Muro town or further afield.

What is Ses Casetes des Capellans?

A small settlement at the southern end of the beach, next to Can Picafort. It began as a group of modest summer houses, some used by the priests of Muro’s parish, which gave it its name. Today there are around 140 small houses on sandy lanes, many handed down within families.
