Living here

Moscari is a small farming village in the municipality of Selva, in the Raiguer below the Serra de Tramuntana, halfway between Selva and Campanet. About 650 people live in and around it. It has a small state school, a nursery and a part-time health post, and Inca is about 15 minutes away. It is a place for a quiet life among old country estates.

The village sits on a slope at about 140 metres, roughly 3 km east of Selva on the road to Campanet, a similar distance further on. Its name appears as Moscàritx in records from just after the Catalan conquest of 1229, and by the 15th century a small village with common land had grown up among large estates. The streams around it, including the Massanella torrent to the south, flow for much of the year and once drove many water mills. In the pine wood on the Puig d’en Guardiola, by the Selva road, stands a 1948 monument to the Sacred Heart, known locally as the Sant de Moscari.

The parish church of Santa Anna grew from an early chapel, renovated and dedicated to the saint in 1669. Side chapels were added in the 19th century, it became a parish in 1935, and the villagers restored it themselves in 1978 and 1979. On Santa Anna’s day, 26 July, Moscari holds the Festa des Fadrí, revived in 1982, which the town hall knows of in no other Mallorcan village. The unmarried young women choose a Fadrí Major, who collects each from her door with a short verse and leads them in procession, with xeremiers (pipers), to the church to offer flowers. Summer festivities fill the last weekend of August.

Services are few but cover the basics. CEIP S’Olivar is a small state school for ages 3 to 12, where children mix across ages, and the town hall runs a nursery (escoleta) in the village. The public health post opens for a few hours on Tuesdays and Fridays, a small pharmacy branch (farmaciola) opens for short spells on weekdays, and the municipal library opens three days a week. There is no market of its own, but Selva and Campanet, a few minutes away, hold weekly ones. Inca, about 15 minutes away, has bigger shops, out-of-hours urgent care at the So na Monda health centre, the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca and trains to Palma.

Who buys here

Moscari is a small, local village. With the arrival of tourism, some of the large estates around it were sold to buyers from abroad, mainly British and German. It appeals to people who want a quiet, traditional village in farming country, with Inca and the mountains close by, and who don’t mind driving for most errands.

Property

Many of the village houses stayed in local families as second homes, and local history credits this with saving Moscari’s older buildings from falling into ruin. Around the village lie almond groves and cereal fields, with some olives, and old estates such as la Bisbal, Auxella and el Rafal. Anyone buying on rural land should check that everything built on the plot is legal and registered, and anyone planning holiday lets should confirm the property’s licence first.

Questions buyers ask

What schooling is there?

CEIP S’Olivar is a small state school for ages 3 to 12, and the town hall runs a nursery in the village. There is no secondary school in the municipality of Selva, so older pupils go to IES Berenguer d’Anoia or IES Inca in Inca.

How good are the buses?

The timetable from November 2025 has nine buses a day from Moscari to Inca on weekdays and five at weekends, taking about 20 minutes, and trains to Palma leave from Inca. Check tib.org for current times; for daily life you will want a car.

What is the Festa des Fadrí?

Moscari’s own tradition for the feast of Santa Anna on 26 July, revived in 1982. The village’s unmarried young women choose a Fadrí Major, who collects each of them from home with a short verse and leads them in procession to the church to offer flowers to the saint.

What about health care?

Only basic care in the village: the health post opens for a few hours on Tuesdays and Fridays. Out-of-hours urgent care is at the So na Monda health centre in Inca, and the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca is about 15 minutes' drive.
