Living here

Santa Margalida, known locally as la Vila, is the inland country town at the head of a municipality that reaches the Bay of Alcúdia. It lies about 10 km from the beaches of Can Picafort and 50 to 55 minutes from Palma. With schools, a clinic and a weekly market, it offers year-round village life with the sea close by.

Santa Margalida stands on a low hill above the farmland of the Pla de Mallorca, in the island’s north-east. Its parish church was founded soon after the Christian conquest of the 13th century and rebuilt on the same spot after a fire in 1320. The lookout beside the church gives wide views over the plain and, on clear days, to the Tramuntana mountains. About 4,500 people live in the town, in neighbourhoods such as l’Abeurador, la Creueta, el Pou de la Garriga and el Molinot.

Life here carries on all year. The town hall is on Passeig des Pouàs, and the town has a cultural centre and a public library, both named after Joan Mascaró i Fornés, plus a municipal auditorium. A small market sets up around Plaça de la Vila on Tuesday mornings, and there are food shops, supermarkets, bars and a pharmacy. Children can go from the state primary school, CEIP Eleonor Bosch, to the state secondary school, IES Santa Margalida, without leaving town. The public clinic on Carrer de l’Hostal opens Monday to Thursday and belongs to the Muro-Marines health centre in Muro.

The big day is La Beata, on the first Sunday of September, in honour of Catalina Thomàs, the 16th-century saint from Valldemossa. Devils with bells run through the streets from early morning, and in the evening a procession of floats, bands and townspeople in traditional farm dress follows the Beata, played by a young woman from the town. Couples carry clay jugs, and devils smash them at her feet. The festival goes back to the 18th century, and in 2026 the Consell de Mallorca listed it as intangible cultural heritage (BICIM), together with the Beata festivities of Valldemossa and Palma. The patron saint’s day is 20 July.

The coast is close. Can Picafort, the resort in the same municipality, is about 10 km away and now has about twice as many residents as the town. Beyond it, the Son Real public estate, run by the Balearic government, has a prehistoric necropolis right by the sea, and the quieter settlement of Son Serra de Marina is about 20 minutes from town. Inca, with the area’s hospital and the motorway to Palma, is 20 to 25 minutes west through Llubí.

Who buys here

This is a town to live in all year. It fits families who value having primary and secondary schools on the doorstep, people restoring an older house near the square, and those looking for a country house in the surrounding farmland, with the beaches of the Bay of Alcúdia 10 to 15 minutes away. Anyone who wants to be by the sea will find more choice in Can Picafort or Son Serra de Marina.

Property

The centre is made up of narrow streets around the church and Plaça de la Vila, lined with older townhouses that have character but often little private outdoor space and little parking. Cadastre records show that most homes in the town are single-family houses, and most of those date from before 1960. Newer houses are mixed in and more common towards the edges, along with a few small blocks of flats, mostly built in the 2000s, and there has been little new building since 2010. Beyond the town, the farmland holds country houses and fincas. For a country property, confirm that every building on it is legal and registered.

How does the town differ from Can Picafort?

Both belong to the municipality of Santa Margalida, but the town, with the town hall, is about 10 km inland, while Can Picafort is the resort on the Bay of Alcúdia. Can Picafort now has about twice as many residents as the town.

Can newcomers take part in La Beata?

Yes. Anyone can walk in the procession as a pagès or pagesa, as long as they wear traditional Mallorcan dress following the town hall’s rules. Joining the devils is stricter: under the 2026 rules, new members must be at least 18 and have been registered as living in the municipality for at least 15 years.

When is the clinic open, and where is the hospital?

The public clinic on Carrer de l’Hostal opens Monday to Thursday: until 8 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and until 3 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is part of the Muro-Marines health centre in Muro, which opens on weekdays and has an urgent care point (PAC) for nights and weekends. The nearest public hospital, the Hospital Comarcal d’Inca, is about 20 minutes away by car.

Is there public transport?

Only a little. Bus line 316 links the town with Inca, stopping at the hospital, and in the other direction with Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina. For Palma you change in Inca or Can Picafort, so in practice you will need a car for most journeys.
