Living here

Port de Valldemossa, known locally as sa Marina, is a tiny former fishing hamlet on the Tramuntana coast, about 15 minutes' drive below Valldemossa village down a steep, winding road. A small cluster of houses, a pebble beach and a harbour for small boats make it mainly a summer retreat. It is a place for a quiet life by the sea, at the price of real isolation.

The hamlet sits just above sea level on the Cala de Valldemossa, a wide, open bay on Mallorca’s north-west coast, below high cliffs and steep slopes. It grew up as a fishing settlement and has become a small summer retreat. Today it is a tight cluster of houses on a few short lanes, with steps and paths between them. At its heart are a pebble beach of about 90 metres and a tiny harbour that only shelters small boats. There is a restaurant by the water and a small chapel, but no shop.

Summer is the hamlet’s season. Only 23 people were registered as living here in 2025. In August the Festes de sa Marina honour the Mare de Déu d’Agost with a Mass in the chapel, fishing contests, a paddle-surf race, a run down from Valldemossa and a sardine supper with havaneres. For daily needs residents drive up to Valldemossa village, about 15 minutes away, which has a small supermarket, a pharmacy, a state primary school and a health unit. The nearest 24-hour care is at the Esporles health centre, about 25 minutes by car.

Everything depends on one road. The Ma-1131 leaves the Ma-10 about a kilometre west of Valldemossa, on the road towards Banyalbufar, and winds down for nearly 6 kilometres. It is narrow and very steep in places. A rockfall closed it in May 2024 until the debris was cleared. On the evening of 20 October 2026, after days of heavy rain, a retaining wall gave way on two stretches of the road. It was closed the next day and the hamlet was cut off by car. In late October 2026 the town hall said the Consell de Mallorca’s road teams were working to reopen it, but no date had been given.

Who buys here

Port de Valldemossa is mainly a place of summer homes, with only a couple of dozen people registered as living there. It works for buyers who want a house by the sea, well away from the resorts, and don’t mind driving up the hill for shopping, school and the doctor. It is a harder choice for families with school-age children, for anyone who cannot rely on a car, and for anyone who needs a dependable road every day.

Property

The hamlet is very small, with a few dozen buildings set close together around the cove and on the steep slope behind it, linked by short lanes, steps and footpaths. Before buying, check how the house is reached, whether it has its own parking, and how builders and deliveries would get in down the narrow Ma-1131. Ask a local architect what the planning rules allow before you plan any work.

Questions buyers ask

Can you live in Port de Valldemossa all year?

You can, but few people do. Only 23 people were registered as residents in 2025, the hamlet is mainly a summer place and there are no shops or public services, so daily life depends on the drive up to Valldemossa village.

Is the road to Port de Valldemossa open?

The Ma-1131 was closed on 21 October 2026 after a retaining wall gave way in heavy rain the evening before, and no reopening date had been given by late October. A rockfall also closed it in May 2024, so check its status with the Valldemossa town hall or the Consell de Mallorca before a viewing.

How far is Port de Valldemossa from Palma?

About 45 minutes to central Palma and 45 to 50 to the airport outside rush hour. The first 15 minutes are the climb up the Ma-1131 to Valldemossa, and from there the Ma-1110 runs down to the city.

Is there a beach?

Yes, a small beach of pebbles and gravel, about 90 metres long, beside the little harbour. There is no sand, so water shoes help, and it suits a swim more than a day on the beach.

What about schools and doctors?

In Valldemossa village, about 15 minutes away, there is a municipal nursery, the CEIP Nicolau Calafat state primary school and a health unit open on weekday mornings except Wednesday. Secondary pupils go to the institute in Esporles, which also has the nearest 24-hour care.
