Living here

Galilea is a small hillside village of about 320 people in the municipality of Puigpunyent, about 400 metres up on the southern slopes of the Puig de Galatzó in the Serra de Tramuntana. Central Palma is roughly half an hour’s drive away. The draw is quiet, views over the mountains to the sea and walks from the door; the trade-off is a drive for most errands.

The village grew slowly from the late 16th century, when land on the Son Cortei estate was split into small plots for settlers, and its houses climb the slope on dry-stone terraces. The church of the Immaculate Conception was built between 1806 and 1810, and its square looks over the village and the mountains to the sea. Nearby are two 19th-century windmills, a house with painted eave tiles and an old snow house, which the town hall says is the only one in Mallorca inside a village. The festes for the Nativity of the Virgin, on 8 September, end on a Saturday with a shared supper in the square.

Services in the village are few: a café, two restaurants, a council multipurpose building, a sports pitch and a small health post where a doctor holds a one-hour surgery once a week. For most shopping you drive down to Puigpunyent village, about 10 minutes away on the Ma-1032, which has two supermarkets, the town hall, a health post open every weekday, the state primary school and a nursery. Bigger shopping means Palma.

Walkers are well placed. The waymarked GR 221 Dry Stone Route runs through the village, and in 2025 the council bought sa Mola, an estate of almost 30 hectares at Galilea, where it plans a visitor car park and signposted walks. At about 400 metres, Galilea is cooler and wetter than Palma, and pine woods and scrub cover much of the hillside around it.

Who buys here

About 320 people were registered in Galilea in 2025, up from about 190 in 1981, although the number has hardly changed since 2010. There is no reliable breakdown by nationality. It makes a quiet base in the mountains for buyers who want views and walking routes on the doorstep, who work from home or are happy to commute to Palma, and who don’t mind driving for shopping, schools and most services.

Property

The old core is a small cluster of village houses on terraces around the church, and the town hall rates the terraces and the village as a whole as being of high heritage value. Further out, detached houses and country properties are scattered over the wooded slopes, including the es Rafal area, some of them with pools. Supply is limited in a village this size. Puigpunyent is one of the municipalities in the Serra de Tramuntana protected natural area, and much of it lies in the UNESCO World Heritage landscape, so have an architect confirm what may be built and get the property’s legal status checked before you buy.

  • GR 221 walks from the door and a new public estate at sa Mola
  • Small village with its own church, café and September festival

Against

  • Few services; most shopping and school runs mean a drive

Questions buyers ask

Is Galilea its own municipality?

No. It is one of three settlements in the municipality of Puigpunyent, with Puigpunyent village and Son Serralta. The town hall, primary school and main health post are in Puigpunyent village, about 10 minutes away by car.

Can I get to Palma by bus?

Yes. TIB line 201 runs every day from Galilea through Puigpunyent and Son Serralta to Palma’s Estació Intermodal. The timetable in force since November 2025 has seven or eight buses a day each way, roughly every one and a half to two hours, and the trip takes about 40 minutes. For daily life you will still want a car.

Is there a school in Galilea?

No. Primary pupils go to the state school in Puigpunyent, CEIP Puig de na Fàtima, and Puigpunyent also has a municipal nursery. State secondary places are at institutes in the north of Palma. The international schools in western Palma and Calvià are roughly 25 to 35 minutes away by car.

How far is the nearest beach?

Galilea is inland. The nearest beaches are on the Calvià coast at Peguera, about 25 minutes' drive via Es Capdellà.

What about doctors and emergencies?

A doctor holds a one-hour surgery in Galilea once a week, by appointment, and the Puigpunyent health post is open every weekday. Both belong to the Son Serra-la Vileta health centre in Palma, which takes urgent cases outside their hours. Son Espases, the main public hospital, is about 25 to 30 minutes away by car.
