Where the schools are
For families moving to Mallorca, the school often decides the area. The island’s international schools are not spread evenly. Most are in the western half of Palma and in neighbouring Calvià, within 15 minutes of each other on the Ma-1 and the Ma-20 ring road. A handful are elsewhere: one in Marratxí, a German school near Playa de Palma, a British school in the north and a school linked to a tennis academy in Manacor.
The list below covers schools we could verify from their own websites, official registers or the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS). We do not give fees, which change every year. Ask each school directly.
Western Palma
- Queen’s College, on Carrer de Saridakis on Palma’s western edge, near Cala Major: British curriculum, ages 3 to 18, with a Spanish section.
- Bellver International College, in Cala Major opposite the Marivent Palace: British curriculum to A level.
- Baleares International College, Sant Agustí: nursery and primary campus of a British-style school whose older pupils move to its Calvià campus.
- Green Valley School, on the Camí de la Vileta at Son Puig: British curriculum to IGCSE, then the IB Diploma.
- Lycée Français de Palma, in the El Terreno and Sa Teulera area: French system, from nursery to the end of secondary school.
- The Swedish school (Svenska Skolan), on Carrer de la Infanta in El Terreno: Swedish curriculum, from pre-school to upper secondary.
Families here tend to look at La Bonanova and Gènova, with gardens and bay views; Cala Major and Sant Agustí, close to the sea; and Son Rapinya and La Vileta, inland neighbourhoods of family houses. Son Rapinya is known across the city as the school zone, because several large Spanish schools are there too.
Calvià: Portals Nous and Sa Porrassa
- King Richard III College, near the Oratori in Portals Nous: English National Curriculum from age 3 to A level.
- Agora Portals International School, on the old Andratx road at Portals Nous: International Baccalaureate, from the primary years to the Diploma.
- Baleares International College, Sa Porrassa, on the edge of Magaluf: British-style school from primary to sixth form.
Around these schools families choose Bendinat, Costa d’en Blanes, Illetes, Portals Nous itself and, a little further west, Palmanova, Son Ferrer and Santa Ponsa. Our Southwest page covers the whole coast.
Marratxí, Playa de Palma, the north and the east
- The Academy International School, on the Camí de Son Ametler in Marratxí: English National Curriculum, ages 2 to 18. Families look at Marratxí’s suburbs such as Es Pont d’Inca, with trains to Palma.
- Eurocampus Deutsche Schule, at La Porciúncula near Playa de Palma: German school from kindergarten to the Abitur. Can Pastilla, s’Arenal and Cala Blava are close.
- Mallorca International School, at Crestatx near sa Pobla: British curriculum, mainly for ages 3 to 16. It serves families in the north, around sa Pobla, Pollença and Alcúdia.
- Rafa Nadal International School, at the tennis academy on the edge of Manacor: an American-style school whose timetable fits around tennis training.
The school run
Distances are short, but traffic is real. Twice a day the roads around Son Rapinya fill with parents’ cars, and residents there have complained for years about school-run jams and the lack of school buses. The Ma-1 between Palma and Portals and the Ma-20 ring road are slowest at the same times. Many families decide that a house within 10 to 15 minutes of the school matters more than the view.
- Visit in term time and ask about places in your child’s year group. Places in some year groups can be limited.
- Ask whether the school runs its own buses and from which areas.
- Check how far the school goes. Some stop at 16, so plan where a teenager would do A levels, the IB or the Spanish Bachillerato.
- Drive the route at 8am before you choose a house, not on a quiet Sunday.
Our guide to moving to Mallorca covers registering on the padrón and the paperwork that schools usually ask for.
