August in Mallorca: fiestas, closures and what to expect

August is Mallorca at full stretch: village fiestas almost every week, a public holiday on the 15th, the busiest roads and beaches of the year, and plenty of local businesses closed for their own holidays. What to expect if you own a home here, or are hoping to buy one this month.

The month of fiestas

Almost every town and village in Mallorca holds its summer festes between July and early September, and August is the peak. Expect a week or more of events: masses and processions, giants and traditional dances, children’s games, open-air suppers, and concerts and dances in the main square that run late into the night.

A few of the best known: Pollença’s Patrona fiestas end on 2 August with a mock battle between Moors and Christians. Artà celebrates Sant Salvador in early August. Porreres honours its patron, Sant Roc, on 16 August, with about a week of events in the Parc de n’Hereveta. In Montuïri, the Cossiers dancers perform on 15, 23 and 24 August, the feast of Sant Bartomeu. Felanitx ends the month with Sant Agustí on 28 August and a night fair the evening before.

If you are buying in a village, find out where the stage goes. A house on or beside the main square will hear the music until the early hours for several nights. It is part of village life, but worth knowing before you sign.

15 August and the local holidays

The Assumption, on 15 August, is a public holiday throughout Spain and appears in the Balearic calendar for 2026, when it falls on a Saturday. Many towns also take their own local holiday in August, when the town hall, banks and many shops close for the day. In 2026 these include Artà on 6 August, Porreres on 17 August, Montuïri on 24 August and Felanitx on 28 August. The Balearic government publishes the full list of local holidays each year.

Who is on holiday

August is also when much of Spain takes its own holidays. The tourist trade works flat out, but outside it, plenty of businesses close for a week or two, and "closed for holidays" signs are a familiar sight in Palma towards the end of the month. Book builders, pool and garden services and any work on the house well before the summer.

For buyers, August can slow things down. Staff holidays affect offices of every kind, and for Spain’s courts August is a non-working month under the law on the judiciary, except for urgent matters. If you hope to sign in August, agree dates with your lawyer, the notary and any lender early. Our buying process guide explains each step.

Roads, beaches and parking

Roads are at their busiest in high summer, with hire cars on every route to the coast, and car parks at popular coves fill early. Some places limit access. In 2026, private cars may not use the road from Formentor beach to the lighthouse between 10 am and 10 pm from mid-May to mid-October, and a bus runs instead.

This year there is an extra date. On the evening of 12 August a total solar eclipse will be visible from Mallorca, with the sun low over the sea to the west. Big crowds are expected at viewing points, so expect heavy traffic that evening and check official notices before setting out.

Heat, fire and water

August is one of the two hottest months. It also falls in the forest-fire danger season, when lighting fires on or near woodland is banned without authorisation. If you have a country house, keep the land around it cleared, and call 112 at once if you see smoke.

Water can be under pressure too. In dry summers some town halls ask residents to limit garden watering and pool filling, as Artà did in August 2025 when it declared a drought pre-alert. Check your town hall’s notices.

Making the most of it

  • Plan building work and big repairs for autumn, winter or spring.
  • Book flights and car hire for August early.
  • Look at your town hall’s fiesta programme, so you know which nights will be loud and which roads will close.
  • Go to the beach early in the morning or in the evening.
  • If you are house-hunting, August is a good month to judge noise, heat and parking at their worst.
